At what temp ...

Looking at a 40 to hold 2 days but maybe to big and should just get one to hold 1 day

In the scheme of things, having a bigger silo than you think you need isnt a biggy as they only cool at the base and first segment and the wash water/chemical would be the same if it was 20k or 40k. Plus there isn’t a great deal of monetary difference once you’re over 30k per 5000 litre capacity
Two day allows for things going wrong with the collection lorries - which happens not infrequently

One thing we didn't factor in was the fact that we start morning milking with the overnight milk at 4 deg rather than 3.2.

Dumping a load of hotter milk on top means that by the end of morning milking, the temp is now 1 deg or so above where it used to be at about 6.5- 7.

Doesn't matter too much now as it appears that our collection time has been altered but it does show that for every action there is a reaction

I always press the super-cool button before milking. That gives the fridge motors a 45minute head start on cooling milk before any more hot milk goes in.

Good thinking ...... will pass it on as I am not out until gone 6am these days

(Not sure we have a super cool tbh ......)

3.5 and start up again at 4.5

When I asked my tank lot about moving it to 4. They said the more frequent startups would be more expensive and reduce condenser life.
Wouldn’t have thought the more frequent start ups would get close to what robot tanks cope with.

Does anyone know how much (if any) milk “shrinks“ as it cools, eg cool1000 litres by 1 degree, does it become 999 litres?

we had 1 tank with it on (Mueller) but not the other (fullwood) had a word with fridge engineer - simple addition of a manual push button fitted to side of control box. 🤷

On our GEA Silo there is a manual button behind the control box. Was told it was just an override if the cooling failed. Maybe it's a "super cool" button too? Will ask our engineer

I press the temp drop button at midday As I walk past to use some of the solar energy and get a bit ahead for afternoon milking

As with post above, you need an alternative cooling source as silos have limited surface area compared to conventional.
Point about capacity is valid too in terms of future expansion plans, ability to hold extra milk if tanker doesn't come and cost being relatively negligible assuming no cooling plates.

Yes we have a snap chiller plus a borehole fed plate cooler so milk enters tank at between 6-7 degs and 9hp of dx cooling on silo takes out the rest.
Chiller is cheaper to run than ice builder unless you have a very cheap overnight power rate

Our silo was set at 3.2 but lorry reads 2.25 so it seems we are cooling unnecessarily AND we are on every day collection so I assume setting to 4 shouldn't make the compressors kick in and out too much?
Well yes but why not get your tank temperture calibrated correctly ??
Its like the worn tape measure ............cut 100mm off and then add 100 to every measurement.
Just get it correct and worry about the next problem...........
