Yes I can remember when it wasn’t on pallets and just stacked on the wagon in hundred weight paper bags. Then the packing plant came in in the 90’s it cost nearly as much to put in as the whole lot cost to build. We had a farm rented off them they always helped us when we were broken down with parts and fitters even. We helped them when we could I worked for them a bit for a good few months 25 years ago. Shame it closed a lot of folks moved away for work a lot of local businesses went things have never been the same. This place is a retirement home now
It would probably be brand new, when I started, pallets, if you got them, stayed on the truck bed and the cement was lifted off on sheets of cardboard.
Forks had to be set up perfectly, some places they had no bother, others were useless. Scariest was getting tipped by crane, with a fork attachment, where they would swing them over parked cars, the public, or anything, I never saw one drop through.

Things are a bit different now. That place employed 420 plus and the hauliers and folks self employed to keep it running. It employed a lot less towards the end. The incommers had a petition on the go before Christmas to get the road closed in Wolsingham up the bank to Tow Law to the 68 for tractors and wagons they had a meeting and luckily they didn’t get their way. Fair few mile detour and a lot complaining are environmental folks

I used to go up both ways out of Stanhope. My first wagon had me terrified going up Crawleyside. Crawler gear, foot hard down and the revs dropping away. That had an International engine in, next one had the Perkins Phaser in and lower geared and limited slip diff. It would go anywhere.

Must have been a Seddon Atkinson then, that engine was rubbish in a truck, borrowed from a Combine.

It was pretty common some of those brakes had leading shoes on they braked better forward than backwards when they pigged on a bank they wouldn’t hold if it was steep and heavy loaded you had to be sharp enough to find reverse to keep the job under control

Just imagine that happening to one of the steering wheel attendants today same with tractors when 100hp used to bring an artic dolly home the tractor needed to be driven/wrestled properly

Got rid of a heap from the old drier bed this week, the guy advertises in agrimart, quite a bit of fencing wire, 2 old ride on lawn mowers, 2 washing machines, a cooker and an old boiler out of 1 of the cottages, got a nice bundle of folding 💷💷💷, I know we probably would've got more taking it ourselves but we're 50miles away from main scrap yard and they wanted £560 for a skip, so happy to see it gone, proceeds are going towards a mag drill for work shop and we have each others numbers stored for when I get more of the drier pulled out
