QMS on halal slaughter

As a somewhat squeamish townie, I have just watched the Chinese stunning of donkeys with a sledgehammer, Mongolian sheep slaughter, and a single halal slaughter of a sheep. From what I have observed, bleeding out can be one of the kindest ways of killing a beast but the sheer volume of stock through slaughterhouses is what brings on all the complications.

Yet, having written the above, I once watched a video of a Chinese pig slaughtering project but despite the large volume throughput of the plant
it all appeared somewhat kinder.

Hmmm, I think I will put off my bacon butty until tomorrow morning!

If the person who is stunning mucks up, it would be dogy to him and fellow workers? Yes?
Why can stock not just bleed after a clean rifle shot in a the head, when I have to get ill stock put down, they are killed instantly if shot right,
Yes a guns dodgy but so is other I would thought,, cut out bullet after, its all chopped up, quick metal detector to find it.
Got to be more sure and humane, Don,t get it why it is not done like that.
I got no qualms about killing a hen or rabbit which I can dispatch instantly as have no qualms with shooting stock.just can not stand this allowance for barbaric religious beliefs, without stun
In the past here in Devon I am told the butcher used to ride out on horseback with the farmer onto the moors, agree a beast and price, shoot it there and then, bleed where it dropped. And bring it back to chop up.so that would suggest to me it can be done.

Think about it! Slaughtering on any scale is done inside a building. Would you want to be shooting a beast with a free bullet to have it possibly ricocheting round inside four walls?? Captive bolts prevent this but for sheep slaughter in a slaughterhouse with a decent throughput, electrical stunning is more efficient and perfectly humane.

It is possible for a beast to be slaughtered on farm and go into the food chain but clearly that is just for broken legs etc not for any sort of volume.

I once worked along side ex military man who, as a boy, worked in a slaughterhouse and he said that they used a captive bolt gun, followed by rod rattled around in the brainbox,

Yes, a pithing rod which destroyed the brainstem and the top of the spinal cord. No coming back from that but it was banned during the BSE crisis as it could result in CNS tissue being found in muscle.

The guy concerned also said that they would see TB infected parts, that they just cut out and the rest of the beast was fed forward into the general food chain. Wally later was conscripted into the Britsh Army and worked in an other form of slaughter house in North Africa.

Some time ago my wife, Margaret, watched a TV program on people in the Far East (China?) eating cats and dogs. Live dogs were beaten with rods before dispatch to tenderise the meat and live cats were thrown into boiling water to ease the removal of their fur. Margaret said it was horrendous to watch the cats being repeatedly pushed into the boiling water and their screams were heartbreaking.

The vast majority of all Halal kill globally is pre-stunned. All NZ Lamb is killed as pre-stunned Halal as if a lot of Australian. In the UK around 90% of all Halal kill is pre-stunned. This is assured by Halal groups such as HCO whose have accreditation for UK pre-stunned lamb is recognised by the world's main Muslim markets - Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia, France etc. In terms of Halal poultry, again almost all UK production is pre-stunned.
As regards Kosher 100% is un-stunned. This is because the Jewish scriptures forbid any it with the animal fully conscious as the shechita is performed. All slaughter be it Halal, Kosher or traditional none religious is supervised by an independent vet at the time of kill.
What surprises me is that a premium lamb brand such as Welsh Lamb doesn't have a stand alone Welsh Halal Lamb brand for valuable overseas markets. Many of these markets are high spend / high wealth economies and with Wales having a really good story to tell in respect to GI (PGI) Welsh Lamb they should use their competitive advantage to the full.
Finally, I really love the Fed by Farmers YouTube broadcasts.
