Try a spot of wiff waff old boy, much less strenuous on one's constitutionSorry but I simply cannot play a chukka of tennis without a banana between frames
You can buy Australian Pink Lady apples cheaper here than you can in Australia.f**k me, apples are more exotic here than bananas
No thats drivel, ask a guy on the street about public goods and natural capital theyll laugh at you, they only care about whats left from their wages at the months end
( I don’t understand that at all myself, as a grain producer my produce & production methods HAVE to meet the standards of the importing country, as they simply won’t buy it otherwise ? ),
The standards that are in force for imports are different to the standards we are made to abide by.India ( our largest chickpea market ) still has a 68% import duty on chickpeas, so there are plenty of chickpeas here looking for alternate homes if you're interested
slightly off topic, but that raises an interesting question
I read all the time on TFF about concerns that the UK is “forced” to accept food imports, even if they don’t meet your particular standards ( I don’t understand that at all myself, as a grain producer my produce & production methods HAVE to meet the standards of the importing country, as they simply won’t buy it otherwise ? ), but India has managed to maintain a 68% import duty on chickpeas ( mainly Australia & Canada, being the 2 largest suppliers ) for a number of years, to “protect” its farmers . . .
why does India have more control over food imports than the UK ?
Now you know how we felt for the last 50 years with no subs....uk will take your neonic treated osr or crl treated wheat no questions asked
^^ just a couple examples but imports to the uk are allowed even if production or welfare standards would be illegal in the uk
in a nutshell that’s why we are pretty upset / disadvantaged and uncompetitive in world markets now
Now you know how we felt for the last 50 years with no subs....
Welcome to our world.
Ant...
Still half of BPS?we wouldn't need subs if all imports to the UK had to meet our legal standards re product use and welfare
there would be not a single tonne of eastern European OSR or wheat in the UK if that was the case, growm with neonics and CTL etc or any GM soya or wheat from USA / Canada and rest of world
I would swap any sub for imports needing to meet UK law / stadards in a heartbeat .......... and become a VERY wealthy man !
PS - UK food production is no longer subsidised at all BTW . Only subs UK farmers can get now are for environmental value
We have the same issues without subs,...for the last 50 plus years...youve gone without subs for a week and crying...you boys need to adapt and overcome like Aussie farmers did.we wouldn't need subs if all imports to the UK had to meet our legal stadrads re product use and welfare

Where can you get 2 Australian pink ladies for a pound????You can buy Australian Pink Lady apples cheaper here than you can in Australia.
You can get them 2 for a pound, last time I was in Australia which was pre covid they were a dollar each.
Bananas are stupidly low here and are less than £1/kilo and that is quite a big increase compared to just a few years back. Very cheap food.
Theyr around 27p in lidl for thier own brand. Taste the sameTins of baked beans are blimmin' expensive! £1.40 each in T*sco!
You'll have your fix, thenMarket day so my local veg market stall had better bananas & plenty of them, where I shop usually anyway.
Banana's have been 45 pence a pound for about 30 years when I was retailing. Partly why I gave up retailing.

Nor was it level when you had subs and we had squat.as a farmer i'm not bothered by no subs - i've wanted them gone all my farming career even though as a land owner they have made me wealthy
As a UK farmer who can't use CTL, Neonics or GM tech and must have farm level assurance we can't compete with imports grown to lower than UK legal welfare or production standards however - that is not a level playing field
