Securing your future: Think one step ahead to reduce farm risks... Written by Acres Insurance Brokers

With pressure on margins and rising input costs showing no real sign of abating, the farming industry’s exposure to risk has never been higher. With latest rural crime figures suggesting that farmers are now not only facing the threat of opportunists taking advantage of often weak security deterrents, but also organised criminals targeted high value goods and equipment, measures need to be implemented to reduce risks and limit opportunities. It really is essential that the progressive farm operation takes a proactive approach to farm security if it is to avoid the threat of losses, theft and injury, potentially resulting in the risk of becoming uninsurable and ultimately unable to continue as a viable business. As an industry, we are open to a wide range of risks and threats, but there are some simple precautions we can take to help reduce these risks and in doing so, support a safer working environment for staff, visitors and the public.

Farm security is sometimes treated with a relaxed approach, but even if only adding a further layer of deterrent, simple measures can have a huge impact, particularly for putting off the opportunist criminal looking for a quick gain. Of course, the best form of defence is to stop any unwanted visitors at the farm gate. Lockable cabinets to secure power tools, for example, adds another layer of security, and one more step that any criminal would have to negotiate...
