I normally bed my sheep on barley straw spread through a straw chopper, however I am thinking of drilling winter oats this year as a break crop, therefore just wondering what the straw would be for bedding.
Thanks
Just wondered who's all working Monday? Just spoke to the contractor for bailing on monday.an he said there are a couple of estates will just check stock in the morning and that'll be them for the day.
What do folks use to fatten cattle?
currently on home grown barley milled up with protein and molasses added. It works but it’s not cheap.
what does everyone else use?
KW Alternative seeds? Is there other similar companies out there selling such stuff?
or something else entirely?
cheers.
As I mentioned on a chat I am going to keep this thread updated with our journey on our new farm with things we are trying and progress attempting to be made. Moving day was September 1st with 3 cattle lorries and one flat bed of an ugly load to get our things here.
1 cattle attic got into the...
Short on winter forage stock so need to plug a gap. Hoping I've got enough good quality silage to feed on the shoulders of the season so just need something to feed over the dry period.

So I’ve been looking for a new small loader tractor and came across some 4230’s and 4240’s that appear to tick the boxes, but while doing a bit of research it seems a compatible sized 5120 or 5130 are better thought of.
The tractor is to be used mainly as a yard tractor, loader work, hay and...

We got a leaflet and associated info through early this year saying as of January 1st 2023 all slurry on a farm in Scotland with over 200 cattle in total must apply slurry using a low emissions system, and there’s a grant to support this.
We’ve ordered one but I can’t say the idea fills me with...
Hello, I wondered if many people had problems stacking mini hestons , 4 string 8’ bales of straw, we have a twin bale spike for picking 2 round bales up , when you pick up a mini heston with it , it always bad to get the tines out of the bale , it keeps pulling the bale back when you try to...
This is a thread for those who feel guilty about cluttering up dear old GUTH’s beloved price tracker with the chit chat that stop us all being that miserable our families would throw us all out to sit with the dog in the porch. All are welcome, you can even post prices if you want. The only rule...
This thread may be interesting for all types of livestock. I'm kicking off with sheep.
I'm in Gloucestershire. Zero grass, unhappy ewes, lambs not growing. No access to any extra grazing. Feed prices doubled....no stock of hay. Can't see the grass recovering for winter 🙈.
Does one just accept it...

Hi all
Just completed our FIRST EVER hay harvest. We decided to do some small square bales to sell to the local community (horse feed, small animals etc). Compared with the round bales, the length of the stems in the bales is very short. It's almost what I'd describe as chopped hay. Is this...
