100,000 pigs to be destroyed

I get those figures are subject to revision but the big four processors will slaughter 100-120,000 pigs a week between them if they are only running at 75% capacity we should be 25,000 pigs a week down. Those extra pigs are not been slaughtered having spoken to vets, marketing groups and other farmers. The increasing average slaughter weight back this up. This suggests that weekly slaughter figures could be 20k higher than they are.The pig industry is a small world most people have a good idea what is happening in there local area, where are these pigs extra pigs coming from? Have the big integrators ramped up there production by such a large number and are now squeezing there independent suppliers?

I have heard that a processor had refused to take pigs from a supplier citing a lack of staff and covid.
The supplier visited the processor to find artic loads of pigs from Germany queued up with the packing plant working flat out butchering them.

Is the backlog situation improving? The cynic in me thinks it is more to do with the huge disparity between UK and EU pig prices.

no......'reliabilty issues at plants'.......' no rush of eu applicants for butchery scheme'......store markets unless contracted ,,,'fatteners can't be tempted at any price'

all quotes from pig world

The East European's aint coming back. In a minute we will have a Zimbabwe chap here, comes to help as he misses being involved in farming back home, he could fill a plane tomorrow with guys to process our pigs, and if our lot don't want to do it then get them over.

Heard of at least one plant, taking what was on contract with regular suppliers but any extras not really wanting them or offering 70p/kg as cheaper to have imported.
One bloke I know saw 2 bulkers been filled with shoulder joints going for pet food

This shambles is a tory mess
Cameron, boris etc are to blame
Anyone who voted tory has only themselves to blame
No, we can blame the opposition for being an even worse shower of unelectables! When one has to choose between taking a bullet in the leg and one in the stomach, its not an enjoyable decision but the odds on which is more survivable are pretty clear.

No improvement here. Taking an absolute pasting on gradings (overweight, over fat), and still being trimmed on numbers every week.

Smoke issuing from the calculator as I type this; some very hard sums being done.

(The cynic in me has had the same thoughts as the cynic in you. I bet they'd soon find the butchers if EU pork weren't so bloody cheap.)

Is the SPP being kept up by including the prices paid for there own pigs therefore if they can’t drop the prices to themselves all they can do is cut numbers and then buy cheaper imported or out of spec? The whole system is broken the events of the last few months prove that. Answers on a postcard please!

SPP doesn't include the processors own pigs, or "premium" pigs (organic, RSPCA Assured etc), just standard pigs. However, it does include the pigs that are overweight and end up going for 70ppkg deadweight. Apparently, just one lorry load of these, per week, is sufficient to drop the SPP by 5 pence. It's an outrage that the "outliers" at the top end aren't included but the lower end ones are.

I think it works a bit like this...

The UK is a net importer of pork. There is a cost associated with importing EU pork to the UK, which obviously is not applicable to UK pork. It follows, therefore that there is a premium in the UK for UK-produced pigs, ex farm. This means that the UK price tracks, to a greater or lesser extent, the EU price, which itself is set by the prevailing market conditions.

Fundamentally, it's not a case of EU pork being cheaper. It's that UK pork commands a premium in the UK over imported pork.

The only issue is...
The EU market is currently grossly oversupplied, due to Germany losing a key export market in China, on account of African Swine Fever in the German wild boar population. This depresses the price of EU pork, which in turn brings down the price of UK pork.

have the government measures had an impact on the backlog yet? Are farmers slowing down production or just hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel?

no improvement.....worse if anything......strategy seems to try and store the pork for when production falls next summer cos of herd reduction now...if i read it right :scratchhead:

pork prices in EU on the floor.....belgium 85p/kg:oops:....how the hell are they surviving:scratchhead:
