2019 Silage Season

No. It would be a big pile of grass for half a ton to be put over the side?

Don't mind the odd small bit of grain spilt, its something for birds and other wildlife to eat.
Cattle won't tidy up spilt grain though.
@Kiwi Pete had some silage left on ground where chopper man missed and regrowth much better.

So no i won't get my knickers in a twist over some silage missing the trailer.
Definitely makes a huge difference in a dry year, if I never need to cut silage off my land again I'll be happy.

I suppose he's going to blow over one trailer into another in the third photo?:banghead:
Also why fill the trailers so full when there's a heap of empties in the field, he's blowing it off the side of the trailer:rolleyes:

Being picky I know, hate to see spilled feed though, you wouldn't do it with a combine.
The trailers are filled like that as it was an hour round trip from field to pit. Yes he was blowing over to the other trailer, drivers preferance. I do not do that i prefer to follow as you can see in the picture. To be honest he did not blow much on the floor i have seen a lot worse. Every drivers different though. Not my problem though as i am paid to take from field to pit. Also it is for AD so it is not like it is for livestock so i am sure they will not miss a bit on the floor [emoji4]

Is that because the jf struggle with it? Think my cousin would be better to do that. us brought a self propelled never go back once had one.
Yes and no, a case of it taking too long to get around the acres as we have expanded and also getting maize in at the same time which some will be after grass. A sp may well be the road we go down in the future.

how many tonne roughly in a day, no point in asking about acres, when I talk about acres I mean 10-12ton crops taken at the start of june, yours are usually a good bit lighter in the UK due to the preference for multicut systems
Don't really have an answer as all of our grass is westerwolds and 2 year irg doing 4/5 cuts as you say.

Is that going back into mazie? Doesn't look like a heavy crop?

No it wasn’t a heavy crop as it is on sand and was a reseed following maize in the back end of last year. Part of a 159ac block so needed clearing at the same time as the rest. However quality looks good.

People still using boots to mesure grass?

Your 1st picture of the mowers, looks like the grass would wait another 10 days. Are you short on.forage so needed to cut?

No plenty of forage. It quite possibly would in that field and on one of the farms the rest was ready and would’ve risked loosing quality. I am a firm believe in seeing your window and taking it. We will often see nice weather in the latter half of April and showers in may. Conditions are perfect currently for harvesting and with rain forecast growth should be well away again. We also risk drying out later into the year so we can normally get a decent second cut if we get in early in the first.

Fair comments. What sort of tons/acre would you have got?

I personally dont believe quality will go down hill for a couple weeks yet, maybe 10 days. Im hoping for 25% more bulk in the next 10 days

The fields that were ready did about 9 tonne an acre maybe a little more. The ones that weren’t ready were closer to 7 tonne an acre but they have a high inclusion of clover so we normally see incredible compensating growth for the following cut.

I would tend to agree that 10 days would probably be safe enough had the this weather been marked to continue or some rain then more good weather I may well have held off a bit. This has been a very exceptional year with winter growth though

For sure if it rains for a month youve pulled the trump card
