3 phase electric

We need to update the farm electrics as they have not been done for donkeys years and are apparently not really safe for qualified people to work with!
Spoke to SSE and have a quote for upgrading to 3 phase, as we are only single phase at the mo, (well 2 phase, but that is another story!)
Cost to join up to 3 phase is £5000 +VAT, which I did not think was that ridiculous. Is it a no brainer to put in 3 phase if we have the chance? and as we need to work on the farm electrics it maybe good to have new start and put 3 phase in! What are the benefits of having 3 phase, and what do I need to think about. Spoke to our electrician today and he seemed to think we ought to do it!

Three phase powered machinery has a smaller audience on the black market.? If using electric to power grain drying fan, mobile dryer or roller mill / mixer it could open up your future options.

Who did you get quotes from? It’s no longer a monopoly with your main distributor now as I understand. We are in the same situation

Im trying to deal with Scottish power to upgrade mine .
They are a bunch of fools , think im on my 7th failed/cancelled appointment now , don't really believe anything they tell me.
Don't believe anything the standard switch board operator tells you.
Im past getting mad , so is any poor bugger who has to listen to me rant .
Good luck

I'd definitely go for it at that price - I've just had a quote from BT for a landline to the farm & that was £5600 +Vat! Having 3 phase opens up a lot of doors for workshop equipment such as lathes, Mills & compressors etc.

I'd say don't skimp on the distribution board(s) - always go for something with plenty of spare ways so that it's easier to add extra circuits in at a later stage. Likewise, get the sparky to fit a 4 pole isolator between the meter & the distribution board so that future upgrades can be done without working live or cutting the fuse seals.

As a starting point I'd opt for a couple of 32A sockets located in convenient spots.

Talking to a chap from Western Power the other day and he told me just to get a pole planted is £2000 plus Vat! So at the price you have been quoted i would be getting it done!

Looking at the diagram that came with the quote yes it is pretty close, virtually opposite the farm. if I had known that a few years ago I would have done it then!
Cost us over 3 times that 35 years ago, sure your not missing a 0, if not go for it.

btw. do you know the size of the new supply, seem to remember that they wouldn't put any extra capacity in for expansion, if you've not given them a specific requirement then the new supply may not light a candle at that price!

motors cheaper and more reliable? Just watch they may have a higher standing charge for the supply (even if you dont use it) we applied for 3 phase and was told at least £70/month though it was for a substantial supply

Quoted £12500.00+vat here for 3 phase which Includes crossing a road and a transformer upgrade, if it wasn’t for the fact the road crossing is £5500 of the price I’d have it done. But £5.5k to cross 10 feet of road is taking the p1ss that works out at £550 a foot !.

Is £5.5k really that bad, they would need one traffic management crew, one to dig road, one to lay conduit and cable, backfill, relay tarmac. Could be 7/8 men in total 5/6 vehicles/machines, and they don’t do quite what you might expect them to do in a day!
Just had my 3 phase overheads put underground and supply doubled(all for free!), took 4 men a day just to put cable from top of pole, down pole and pull through duct 40m, not even connecting it.
