From what I have learnt and experienced during last 40+ years:
The weight of the tractor should be 800 - 2000 kg per a plough bottom depending on the soil type.

My late old man used to have 3 bottom plougs on Nuffield 1060 tractors.
Then later on we have had a 4 bottoms on a Volvo BM T 700 (4,2 ton 90 hp) and after that 3 bottom return plough on the same tractor.

Now pulling a 4 bottom 18" return plough with a JD 3650 tuned to some 130 hp maybe. I can work also the tight spots to my full 26-28 cm, but speed drops down to 7,5 - 8 kph in those places...
Nuffields 3 bottoms and Volvo with 4 bottoms newer could do that.

So I would say that if you want to put 4 bottoms behind a Nuffield 1060 or MF 165 You can not be able to go to a proper ploughing depth...

From what I can remember of my dad ploughing with his my 65 four furrows was it’s limit. The arms weren’t the strongest and would have been better with three furrows and moved a little quicker. This would make more sense if your pulling up hill as the furrows would flip over rather than stand up. The older generation ploughed slower and shallower with Boards that were longer using less power. Discs will help it pull easier in clay

My neighbour used a four furrow behind 65 , when we took his farm on the land was in a bad state as it was heavy ands he had continually spun his wheels across the field causing bad compaction we ploughed with three and the next years crops were better than anything he had grown in the past 15. We only moved to four when we had a County

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
