He said fert spreading and spraying all done by contractors aswell. The owner may aswell get someone nearby who can actually do the job or just pay people on a job by job basis and forget the middle man! It’s very different using a contractor as a backup to using them as the main plan. Do you know how cfas work?

The owners probably a very rich individual
who's not interested in managing cereal production .
Lexion 1000 never said what arrangement.
If its on a fixed fbt for say 5 years you can employ who you like!:banghead:

Schoffel branded clothing?

You do seem to know it all for a 27 year old.

Did daddy buy the quadtrack for you?

He’s not a Schoffel kind of guy ! And imo knows what he’s talking about

Most 27 yr old who don’t have a Quadtrac have ambition to get one

A 27 yr with a quadtrac already probably has greater ambition to get rid of it !

Been there personally, Done that, Got the tee shirt (which I could fortunately just about afford still !)

It’s cost so much in depreciation I don’t think I can get rid of it but I would very much like too!

The answer to the OP of this thread is actualy very simple

Do the numbers ! You are running a business. At 2900ac you already have plenty farming to “enjoy”

ie if you can see a profit that makes the risk worth it over any increased capital and labour that might be required then do it ..... . If you can’t then don’t !

Thankyou for putting what I have been trying to say for pages so succinctly!

What was the issue with a quadtrac? Lots of people make them (or slightly smaller tractors) stack up?

Have you read the thread? I have said about 5 times it would be profitable! Its very good land and I can get it on a good deal it’s the pain in the neck factor of farming land 40 miles away that I’m not sure about. I do plenty of contract farming already and I know what makes them work.

By quadtrac I mean “big hp, heavy weight, captal and running cost intensive tractor / farming system”. Not singling out the brand ! “Quadtrac” has almost become generic for this kind of big acres big kit farming system

Do people “really” make such farming systems stack up ? I’m not convinced personally (and have the benifit of hindsight having been down that road in the past) ...... smoke and mirrors !

So what my post says stands then (have you read it ? !) - if you have done the numbers and that profit reflects any additional cost / capital investment and RISK ........ do it

Why even ask on here if you already knew the answer ? Or is this about ego ?

I’ve just spoken to a friend of mine who has 750 acres he OWNS 42 miles from home and he gets someone else to do it despite being s contract farmer himself!

This thread is like a hamster wheel I can’t get off! I wish I’d never asked. I was only hoping to hear a few opinions of people farming land a long way away.
