Hi!

i have an mf 5455 -2010 about 5k hours.

the 4wd stopped working

the 4wd light works as usual, when i push the 4wd on/off button it works i also hear a small clonking sound when i push it,i have felt the solenoid and it seems to be working, as i ,put my hand on it and a friend pushed the button i felt it moving.

i have checked the bolts that are on the sleeves that goes on the axle, they seem to be fine.

when i lift the front wheels in the air, i can turn them by hand....

before it stopped working when it came up to 15/kmh it whas a pretty hard CLONK when it switched off the 4wd.

any ideas?

thanks

We first noticed it when we had a prop shaft bearing go. Managed to get it all back together with a new collar to nurse it through haylage making. A few weeks down the road and started making a clunking noise when engaging 4wd with brakes. Had to cut pinion off the new collar so no choice to change it after.
We needed new crown wheel/pinion. New prop shaft and a pair of bottom hub bearings. Best part of £2100. We’d done approx 1200hrs in the tractor in the time we’d had it. Hopefully good for the rest of its life.
We think ours had done a lot of work with loader and 4wd always engaged prior to us having it.

Hi, any help appreciated, our Front axle pinion shaft has worn away again. we do do a lot of roading so i guess that's the problem. we replaced the complete front diff last time approx 2000hrs ago. Fairly dissappointed that its only lasted this long.

Any upgrades available

Did you replace the axle pivot bushes at the same time snd been greasing them since? It’s the bushes wearing, allowing the axle to sit out of line meaning that the shaft is not running true with the prop shaft and thus wears the splines. Ideally tractor needs raising iff the floor to greae using the loader or a jack under something other than the axle so that the axle is hanging innthe mounts rather than supporting the tractor so grease can get on top of the bush, the part that carries the weight

Actually i dont think we replaced the bushes when we replaced the diff. we have been religiously greasing it though using the telehandler to lift it off the floor.

Do we need to get bushes manufactured or are they of the shelf?

Thank you.
