So it can be done, but because no one has really done it much in this country, you would become a target for vosa who would not know/understand/care about the rules and try to do you anyway?

Definetly possable, and definetly legal. Just the cost is an unknown.
I have been hankering after just such a solution for upping my trailer weights behind my Land Rover 130 (with the aformentioned 7ton train weight:)) for several years, i just dont have as much a need as simon @smcapstick so never looked into ££££ required.
Search ebay for "mini artic" and you can often find comercial vehicle examples.

Tachograph, CPC and operators license is required I think! Provided the train weight doesn't exceed 7 tonnes.

Bit of a grey area to find out about tbh as there is very little info on the internet about it, but that's about all I can decipher from it. I reckon you could have it so you could have a 3.2t payload on a flat trailer roughly. Not sure about braking though?!

So if you were carrying your own goods, with a fifth wheel, you could tow 4.5 t and still be under the 7 t so no tacho.

If you use a smaller vehicle (eg a 4x4) for towing, you’ll only need a tachograph if its total weight is more than 3.5 tonnes.there are exemptions
  1. Vehicle was manufactured prior to 1 January 1947

  2. Vehicle is over 25 years old and is not used commercially for carriage of goods

  3. Vehicle is not capable by design of exceeding 40km/h under its own power on level road

  4. Vehicle is not over 7500kg GVW or is part of a combination of vehicles not over 7500 kg combined GVW which is not used commercially for carriage of goods

  5. Vehicle is not over 7500kg GVW or is part of a combination of vehicles not over 7500 kg combined GVW which is used to carry materials equipment or machinery for the driver s use in the course of his work within a 50 km radius of base and where driving is not the driver s main activity

  6. Vehicle is not over 7500kg GVW or part of a combination of vehicles not over 7500 kg combined GVW which is propelled by natural or liquefied gas or electricity and is used within a 50 km radius of base

  7. Vehicle is used in connection with sewerage, flood protection, water, gas or electricity maintenance services, road maintenance or control, door-to-door refuse collection or disposal, telegraph or telephone services, radio or television broadcasting or detection of radio or television receivers

  8. Vehicle is used by or on behalf of a relevant NHS body or other authorised body to transport organs, blood, medical supplies or equipment

  9. Vehicle is a specialised vehicle used for medical purposes
10. Vehicle used by a local authority for relevant social services functions

11. Vehicle is used by coastguard or lighthouse authorities

12. Vehicle is used by harbour authorities for improvement, maintenance or management purposes within harbour limits

13. Vehicle is used by an airport authority within airport perimeters or used on roads inside hub facilities such as a port, interport or railway terminal

14. Vehicle is operated by British Railways Board, a Crown railway network licence holder, Transport for London or a local authority or PTE for railway maintenance purposes

Who's rewarding me? I need that round baler to clear up the lawn clippings (y)

When you sell it delivered. And your company name kind of give the game away with 'Plant Trading' in it.

Not saying I agree with it (the Law).

Had a demo plough delivered. Company rep had a tacho in his truck.

A goose neck trailer such as you are proposing for farm and general use is much better on a ball than a mini fifth wheel, the ability to pivot side to side/front back is greater with the ball...from memory I think the ball is two and a quarter inch.

The plate that carries the ball is bolted/braced under the bed, just a hole cut in the bed to access the ball...many are flip over so out of sight when not in use.

You could go all the way and remove the pickup bed and install a flatbed. far more durable and easier to load/unload, here Ford whoever will supply the truck, bed delete so you save the expense of buying a bed you do not need.

There is also a safety chain anchor point at the side of the ball.....................one last point, don't forget to lower the tailgate while un-hitching.

A quick Google of goose neck trailers will line you out.

So of any train weight is over 3.5t then it needs a tacho? :scratchhead:

If the trailer weight is over 3.5t it will need a tacho (which is illegal on most other than with a 4 pin towbar) but I'm not sure how this stands when you use a fifth wheel since you are incorporating the bed weight. This is the sort of stuff which is hard to find out

IMO a fifth wheel or ball hitch in the back of a pickup is much safer anyway and there shouldn't be as many silly laws regarding it like tachograph, CPC etc. It will have better braking, better weight distribution and shorter overall length than a bumper towed trailer.
