Too short answer for a too short question:
NH8970 Genesis was 240hp, 210 at the shaft.

The Marine version does comfortably over 350hp, but obviously you have the huge luxury of an almost infinite heat dump for intake charge cooling.

To answer the OP's Q- with some bigger injectors, DV's in the pump, and reasonable air to air cooler, 300hp would be fairly easy.

Unlikely to be able to sustain that continuous as the tractor radiator would be too small at that power level though.

I am of course ignoring any transmission & diff limitations !

Alastair Cooke in Northern Ireland has one doing in round 400hp I think. Have a look at his YouTube channel and an interview with farmflix on YouTube for more on what changes he has made. Think he stated the poweshuft transmission in his 8970 is rated for 600hp.

Those Funk 16x gearboxes were ahead of their time, seriously good in a 70 series.

Nothing is rated in horsepower, - they are rated for torque.

I take it you're talking about the gearbox, and you meant to quote @fiatf130 ?

How much power could i reliably get out of one if I fitted an intercooler ?

Come to think of it, there is a known issue with the 'smaller' Powerstar 7.5's.
From memory the version fitted to the 8670's didn't have under piston oil squirters, and when the fuelling was tweaked a little too far the piston crowns would overheat and fail.
It wasn't an issue on the 3 bigger models, but it caught out a lot of 8670 owners who were after a cheap upgrade but ended up with the cost of a rebuild.

Constant load too, and no chance of a sudden stress torque spike that you might get with say a tyre spinning suddenly gripping.

A TM165 with mechanical pump. Was harm being done to the back ends or were they just running very hot? The oil cooler is a bit petit on the 165. I was often thinking of fitting another or 1 bigger cooler but never did yet. At 40K on road work they get fairly hot.
