Turning into two months without rain now , what is noticeable here is the land that’s had lots of dung over the years is not suffering the rest is.
Now at 18.8mm for May (and the last 10 weeks)
I put a rain water harvesting system for spraying in mid March, should fill with 50mm (average monthly rain) it is nearly empty.

This is turning into a bad Spring Drought but nothing new if you look back. In the 1700,s Gilbert White recorded a few Spring Droughts with 1775 being particularly bad and 1785 and 1769 nearly as bad. 1775 broke in June with some huge storms and a following wet spell.

Did nothing happen in the 1800's and 1900's then.
I think we now all expect the weather to break and we will have 3 months of well above average rainfall when it is too late for combinable crops.

1700,s is just an example although the weather was particularly extreme around the time of Gilbert White.

Our 10 week total now stands at,
drum roll please

a grand total of 5mm,

I would say we are up the creek, but the creek has dried up.

'bout the same in this arid bit of Shropshire. Bummer is that 5 miles away they have had several good showers to keep the grass green and "might" save the Spring drilling.

Wondering what the best summer sown crop will be for some grazing for the Sucklers come Autumn and into Winter. Think they will be wintering outside on sand this time.... Straw will be too costly!

I was going to spray off some grass for stubble turnips 2 weeks ago but the wife stopped me !! In 2 minds now but best we left it as it is considering

Aye, bird in the hand thing... at least you have a bit of grazing at the moment... Looking at my aftercut last week, I reckoned I could DD into the stubble with little competition. The seeds would not grow mind!!

Wondering on a root or a leaf crop?
