A significant day for democracy in Northern Ireland

For the majority of gay people, it brings little new. Marriage tends to have religious connotations, and as you have said, many people aren't interested in that today.

There's just a hint of irony though, that perhaps the people who will benefit the most from the change will be christian gay people, who would want to have a union that is structured on a christian ceremony rather than a civil partnership.
Why would you suggest it was ironic?

Why? Well, because the majority of people who campaigned against it were probably heterosexual christians (of various shades).

I see no irony if people who vote against something that they get no direct benefit from, people are genereally selfish.

I do however find it sad that people would act in a manner that caused them to vote against an entitlement for people's relationships to be legally recognised.

Religeon and marriage are not in a lot of cases associated these days, and many who are married in churches simply do so due to tradition or for the look of it, rather than due to Religeous beliefs.
