Can anyone recommend accountacy software for a start up business. Sole trader , no employees, vat registered (by choice) . Suggest modest turnover (30k ?) . Google searches suggest Freshbooks in preference to Quickbooks as better suited to small businesses. Any thoughts, input welcome.....

What does your accountant use? It's easier for them to access your accounts for end of year if you use the same software.
I'm using Accounts VT as that is the preferred choice of my accountant, I get on with it very well, it's easy to use. Doesn't have an app as it's fully laptop/PC based, so don't think it would sync with your banking app if that's a consideration for you.

Surely the whole idea of accountancy software is to avoid paying an accountant ?
Basic sole trader business. Very straight forward - invoices are labour + parts.

Xero is fine but you are on your own for support and the prices are shooting up. The wife uses QuickBooks and likes it but her business is very simple, maybe 30 transactions per year.

Xero.

Only training i did was an hour on the basics with my accountant. Online help is very useful. These days i would say the Xero thread on here is even more use. There are a number of very experienced TFF Xero users.

This ^^^. I've just converted from sum-it to Xero. Had an hour with our accountant to get set up and then any queries have been answered by the thread on here, couple of friends that are more experienced users or an online search.
