Good to see you back! Please keep posting.
I would be interested in seeing a monthly blog post from you - I know you must be busy so monthly with updates on your year. How about others?

Here in Alberta we're in drought mode. Desperately needing rain.

The first cut of hay has come down this week and in the area around me people are saying their yields are at 30%. A 1250 lb round bale was advertised for $200 yesterday, double anything from previous years. It's ignited some serious panic and on the drive home today it was amazing how many ditches have been swathed and raked to get baled! Been years since I've seen this much motivation.

In the crop department the canola is scary with some fields looking anywhere from 25% - 50% that didn't even germinate. What has come up is already flowering despite being barely higher than the stubble from last year. The cereal crops are looking alright so far but are already starting to head out as well. If the heat continues without the rain they'll be burning off badly. This may be the only year farmers are unanimously hoping for a massive hail storm to wipe them out.

Hi to all of you farming around the world.
What are the main problems with your soils that are limiting crop production yields, that have not been farmed for so long as those in the U.K. Worldwide our soil is mankinds greatest asset . NO SOIL NO FOOD !!!! Here in the u.k I don't think farmers have very big soil problems compared to those of you farming in other countries.

Being one of the farthest things possible from a crop farmer and enjoying it I can't really answer your question about soil. Biggest issues farmers seem to have is diseases if they don't rotate often enough and not enough water some years. Never hear much about soil and never about issues. Only thing I'll hear is sandy vs loamy etc. and usually how it pertains to equipment getting stuck and the size of the ruts they have to disc out in the spring

Many thanks for your reply.
How has your summer been as regards moisture etc?

Dry as a popcorn fart for the first bit. Trouble with crops germinating and first cut of hay was atrocious. Then most places got rain - so much they had issues getting in the fields to get the crops off. Rain seems to have been in time to save most things as crop yields are some of the best ever and second and sometimes even third cuts of hay were great. Helped with the feed shortages from the shoddy first cuts alright.

Some places never got rain and grew nothing but grasshoppers.

Im a manager in the arable division of Almarai, growing alfalfa, maize silage and corn for the companies dairy farms. There are 3 main arable farms supplying feed for 6 dairy farms which are milking somewhere in the region of 120-130000 cows

Are all the crops grown with pivot irrigation supplied from bore holes or ?? Do the irrigated circles show on Google earth also dairy units?
Be interesting to see.

Yes all crops irrigated through centre pivots, ranging from 35 to 75 hectares. Water is pumped from underground wells. Yes if you search for Hail province you can see the circles, good idea of how extensive it is! Dairy farms are all based around Riyadh in the south, especially around the town of Al Kharj

I have just looked at the "Almarai"website so I can see how it all started.
