Thinking of starting a calf disbudding/dehorning service.

would there be much of an interest in this service within N.I.

how much would you’s be willing to pay for such a service

Not a job I'm particularly fond of, but wouldn't want to pay someone to do it either. Others may have a different opinion. Perhaps if you offered other services like pding, freeze branding or foot trimming etc you could go to a farm and get a full days work there.

There's a surprising amount of older farmers on there own who depend on vets or neighbours for Dehorn ing squeezing tagging etc.
But will they pay you, I have no idea

Local man does just that, as well as squeezing. Does a lot of work in the area, we’ve used him for years, just found with suck calves we needed an extra hand more than anything. Now dairy and do our own at a couple of weeks old. Found he was getting expensive and it’s time consuming doing the bigger calves. Young ones take no time at all and the small calf crush means there is no wrestling.

Do you know what the legalities are round this? always thought it would be a good business idea but not sure if it should be done by vets?????
Nothing stopping farmer doing it himself. Don’t see why it should be an issue? Or only carried out by a vet?

Maybe best to check it out in case it comes back to bite you if something goes wrong ( infections , something dies), but taking that its all ok I would think there could be demand for someone for that kind of work who's good round cattle. If you offered dosing etc as well might be a demand for that. I know I do a bit of dosing, dehorning, tagging on my own as my son works out and its not really a one man job so must be plenty more like me out there.
