And... exhale...

Having a quick late lunch today put the tv on, and on s4c (wales's version of channel 4) was a re run of cefn gwlad (the welsh countryside programe) from the preseli hills in pembrokshire west wales from yr 2000.
They were following quite a few farms, but there was quite a few sheep and dairy farms featured.
Ok they were all small family ffarms, all neat and tidy. One thing that amazed me , is how much the cows have changed in twenty years, christ some of these frisian cows would put suckler cows of today to shame !
Well worth a watch on i player.
Not sure whether our english counterparts can view it with or without subtitles ?

Just seen the program on iplayer now. Well worth the watch, amazing how old fasioned things lookes with only being 2001. All cows and farms looked well. Something to say about mixed enterprise farming.

Why not blood test once a year. You guys with the herringbone races it would be a breeze to do.

Depends on how long you've been testing. The more years you've tested with high negative the lower frequency you need to test as you know the risk level.

Doing it quarterly allows you to make decent decisions early on - if she's medium or higher she'll probably get beef at breeding time which is just around the corner. If she continues to be medium or higher she can be put in a separate shed at dry off.

These cows are also at or approaching peak yield and if any cow is going to show signs of Johnes it will be these peak cows going through the various metabolic stresses that peak yield cows do.

Plus the same milk sample for Johnes can also be tested for cells plus anything else.
