Humbolt forage rye being mowed today to start the 2022 forage campaign
Hell of a crop. How does rye normally analyse?

Is there any milk in it ?
Cows can't read the analysis so why worry.
protein, high to low 4% to 48%, starch energy all over the place.
what l can say, cows like it, and at 30% of TMR, if it was crap, they wouldn't milk well, they are milking well.
Bulling hfrs, were getting to fat, with maize and blend, so they didn't go backwards, when on rye/vetch alone. Younger hfrs have grown very well, on it, but maize and blend, as well. So to be honest, it feeds well.
We are thinking about replacing h/rye, with w/wolds, the timing to get it in, between maize, is rather tight, and the maize last autumn, didn't ripen early enough, so w/wheat instead.

Earlier samples suggested it was much closer to 11.6 me and the cows would agree. Certainly noticed it when we ran out
and yet we couldn't get a meaningful analysis. While l didn't like not getting one, l can see the reason, a sample is only a fraction of the pit, and only a fraction of that sample is actually tested, and we know, the stem to ear ratio is very high, so a more stem, test, will produce a low reading, but the opposite, for more ear. So not really sure any of previous years analysis's were correct, they certainly varied as we went back through the pit.
But like you, it has fed well, and that's about all l can say.

Would it not be the same as analysing wholecrop? (Never grown it, only maize and grass for ensiling here)

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
