Animal health plan

Just had our farm assurance inspection and didn't have health plan done so I now need to get one and send to them , Do you get your vet to do one or is there a online form to fill out and print off so I can send it to the pen pushing feckers ! . Many thanks, pi$$edoffwiththissh1t.com.

A few years back I got a Heath plan from our local vet. Spent 30 mins discussing issues and noted them in plan. FA Inspector requests to see it every year and as long as you sign it each year he was happy that.

Do it yourself. Just write down what you do as a routine plan each year.
The ironic thing is they're not interested what's in the plan just that you have one. Cut and paste same plan each year on the computer and just save it with a different year to show its updated.

In this months 'Sheep Farmer' there is an additional booklet called 'Flock Health Planning' which as well as being a guide to how to complete/what it should include it also gives some reasons for having one. It does make interesting reading and is published by The Moredun Foundation, they may if you get in touch have it in electronic format that they could email to you. It may be worth giving them a call 01314 455111 it is 'News Sheet Vol.6. No.3,August 2014.

Had our inspection today. Had a health plan but didn't have it signed by vet so he said we need to get it done for next year. Will just get it vet to sign one when they are out next

Your vet will probably want to put his input into your plan and also want paying. It's not like you can go anywhere else for a signature and they'll know it.

Mine reads it and signs it with no charge, he says its a good plan and he hardly ever comes so it must work :)

It's certainly required for the Marks & Spencer Farm Assurance audit, if you want to get on their supplier list.

Not sure with the present state of the supermarkets that Assurance audits are going to be a very high priority!!
For the time being price will be everything for the majority, differentiation of better welfare etc. will not be so easy to sell as the retail price gap widens.

Tesco is going to tackle Aldi and Lidl head on and to do so it has to happen on price and the rest of the supermarkets will have to attempt to get close.
It is interesting to note that at present Aldi and Lidl's costs are some 50% lower than Tesco's and I would guess the likes of M&S and Waitrose are similar. What is also interesting is that the discounters are less likely to screw their suppliers but will probably still require Farm Assurance.

Animal Health plans are required and because in future you will have to have the Vet visit once a year I guess getting him to sign a piece of paper will be no hardship as he will already have billed you!!

You want the health plan the vet doesn't so why shouldn't he charge you? They can be tick box things not worth the paper they are written on or can be really useful depending on the circumstances, if you have to pay your vet take an hour out sit down and talk about problems/potential problems. Get something of value out of it

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
