Another walker trampled

Years ago I moved a footpath which ran diagonally across a field and re-instated it along one edge. 2 years ago I fenced the field side of the footpath. The weeds have grown thick and fast and the path hasn't been used (as the walkers can no longer divert into the field to avoid the weeds. Problem solved

Until someone gets the maps out and start complaining they should be using the original path

I doubt they would have a footpath through the lions enclosure either.

Should farmers put cows and calves in fields with footpaths?
We have arrived at that conclusion, a field with a footpath gets no cows. The future plan is more sheep less cows which is a pity but such is life.

I have more fields with footpaths than not, I can't shut them so use them to my advantage. I put up signs at the entrance to each field where there are cows, the sign explains the risk, suggest an alternative route and leave my mobile number. I've had no problems, no arguments and indeed have increased our retail sales. In the future we will increase the amount of info available at different points so to increase public knowledge and hopefully suppprt and retail sales. I'm sure it wouldn't work for all, but it does for us.

So perhaps it's time to accept that a field with a footpath across it has less value than one without a path because of the hassle!

Surely it's factored into the price already? Only an idiot would pay full price for land that they had partial use of.

This is the thing. I have about 100 metres of footpath that cuts a corner of a field. Common sense says walk round the perimeter. They get more footpath. I can fence it off. Simples. But it's not simple:(

For 100m, I think I'd just fence off the corner and keep the public out. How much land would you lose productivity on - a quarter acre or so? It would be worth it for peace of mind, IMHO.

Only way to fence three foot wide fence netting plus barb on foot path ,but still go tits up because will need gates(they will leave open )I gave up sheep ,and also lim sucklers ( and they were the madest ) now keep Hereford cross bullocks ,which give me please of mind never any point explaining to walker or non farmers more chance of making a vegan eat meat !!

A guy 20 miles from us did this in 2014; before then every man and his dog used to roam all across the field, cut the wire and use as a free for all. He had enough and there was nothing they could do about it. Ugly as sin, expensive and not for me but due to the issues he had and the location near an estate, I dont blame him. Before he did it they ignored him, after he did it they complained as he thereafter refused to talk to them about perhaps a compromise.

Was in my yard yesterday and took a phone call. During the chat I ended up wandering down to the fence by the cattle field and noticed 2 late middle aged men walking their spaniel up the footpath of the field. There are 15 cows in the field, 4 with small calves but the cows didn’t bother them at all, they were looking, but at least half of them stayed lying down, and the rest stayed grazing in the herd, occasionally looking over.
The dog walkers got half way across the field and then decided to let the dog off the lead!
The dog straight away made a beeline for the cattle and so I jumped the fence, shouted at the dog and the walkers and told them to put the dog back on the lead!
The dog went back to the owner with its tail between its legs and the owner called back “alright, keep your hair on!”
I had to leave the situation before I said something I regretted, but couldn’t believe the idiocy of the owner, and the lack of respect for the cattle whom I was quite proud.
Imagine if the cattle had been more possessive. I don’t even walk my own dog through the cattle.
