The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has today (Monday, February 26) appointed a new lead non-executive director.
Elizabeth Buchanan’s term will begin on April 1, 2024, and last for three years.
She succeeds Chris Nicholson, who has served as lead non-executive director since 2018.
Buchanan is a former non-executive board member at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
She has worked in senior roles across the public and private sectors for over 30 years, APHA said.
She also manages her family’s 300ac organic livestock farm in East Sussex, which produces pedigree Sussex beef.
Non-executive board members are senior figures from outside government, appointed to provide challenge to government departments and bodies.
All non-executive board member appointments follow an open and transparent process, in line with the government’s Code of Good Practice for Corporate Governance in Central Government Departments, APHA said.
The APHA Steering Board provides strategic direction and is responsible for ensuring the agency meets its targets and manages risks.
APHA is seeking a veterinary pathologist of a senior executive officer grade.
The deadline for applications is 11:55p.m on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
The salary range is £42,577 – £47,039.
APHA said the jobholder will be working in a team of veterinary pathologists to deliver pathology of a range of research and surveillance projects focused on high-impact, notifiable and zoonotic diseases of production animals.
This will be done as part of the work of the Pathology & Animal Sciences Department and the wider agency toward achieving objectives of protecting public health, preventing farm animal disease as well as promoting One Health and animal welfare.
