I would still prefer steady work all year than a few Months of mad hell
And all weather dependent , I've walked in those shoes , gave me blisters, so binned them

Merry Christmas from Brighton🤣

I rest my case

I grew up on a livestock farm so made a conscious choice that was not how I wanted to spend my life. I wanted 3 things from my career choice, 1) enjoyment 2) time away from it to enjoy none working life / relationships with others and 3) the money to allow me and my family choices , experiences and opportunities

although carrying on as a livestock farmer like my father “maybe” offered number 1 it never looked likely to deliver number 2 or 3 ! i’m lucky that the choice I did make has done so however

greatest of respect to those that do keep livestock as i do know first hand how hard and committed it is Arable isn’t always easy but it’s certainly a LOT easier than livestock farming in my experience

I‘m pulling the chain of you arable boys. Used to grow 400ac of cereals in the 80s and 90s with a sheep flock to keep me busy October to March
Weather is the great leveller and can destroy a seasons work in 24hours such as wind turning OSR from brown, full pods to white empty ones .. or disastrously picking Moulin as your wheat variety of choice.

Now I mess about with 166 cows and spend my life coated in slurry to the extent that I have to take my trousers off as soon as walk in door .. By Order

arable really is a part time job on a cereal farm there really isn’t much to do November- March so you could easy spend a couple months shooting, pre christmas ski, post christmas / new year Caribbean maybe a yacht ? bit more late shooting and then time for more skiing in February

trouble is part time arable alone will certainly not fund that lifestyle for long !
