Arable record keeping

What are folks using and why?

I write my own recommendations.

Still using a diary/paper based system for record keeping but looking at Green light grower and the like. As a luddite I want something easy to use, idiot proof which can maintain stock check and be portable on Android which I am told Green light doesn't do??
Easy to use and stock don’t necessarily go hand in hand. You have either be very accurate or it has to have an easy way to reconcile it. Or several ways to reconcile it depending on how you want to do it. The simplest programme may appeal initially but it may leave you frustrated further down the line with lack of flexibility and functionality.

Yeah gatekeeper becoming very expensive now IMO.something bit more basic and easier to understand would suit me better and cheaper !!!

I will be switching to Omnia in the next year or so... Recs and compatibility has kept me with gatekeeper until now but Omnia is looking slick with the upgrades due soon. Fieldmargin is good for a lot but not for recs.

I’m using Geofolia from Landmark. The mapping is great, all the drivers have the app on their phones which works well for recording operations and sending work plans. Desktop program is Windows only which isn’t ideal for me.

My only criticism , which wouldn’t affect most, is I can’t view all the land I farm at the same time as there’s too much data so I can only see all the data on 1 stock centre or select crops on multiple stock centres.

I developed my own spreadsheet some years ago to all my arable record keeping.
Each row starts off with the field name, then its map reference number, what the crop was last year and now is, date it was drilled plus seed rate etc. Various following columns record sprays, and fert applications. Each colours will be for a certain operation, eg T1 spray so that they are all grouped.
Bottom rows add up total areas, and costs.

I find it is pretty good at giving me the information I need and costs bugger all to create and keep up to date.
The use of different colours for different crops, help group the together and it is very easy to use as a base spreadsheets to select specific areas to answer different questions I might get asked.

Field work plans on geofolia are not a patch on gatekeeper ones. Lacking info and difficult to follow compared to gk.
Rest of programme a lot easier to navigate than gatekeeper but developers only do a few updates a year to correct glitches which can be an issue due to it I think being initially developed in France. (Have had work plans generated in French!)

@Davylad we have something in the works that might be of interest for you. Send me an email if you would like to have input.

@farmerfred86 it would be great to know what isn't working for you for recs. Please drop me a line if you would have time to discuss.

If anyone else here is looking for a tool that is easy to use, works on the go, has great maps, and is continuously being improved and updated based on the feedback we get from farmers give fieldmargin a go. We are always happy to answer questions to help you get up and running.

Sorry Camilla,

I've just noticed you have added some good functionality since I last tried recs in field margin. I suppose GK and Omnia have (will have) sentinel which adds a lot for recs but not necessary for everyone.
Keep up the good work!

Green light is ok but they are no longer developing it so I think it will fall by the wayside, I’m not laying all that money for something they don’t improve.
Got a demo of something not yet to market next week which looks very interesting and ‘may’ finally be the answer
Greenlight here too, I think I might know the one you're talking about, if it's an added feature to an already existing product. I am getting strongly led in their direction.

To the OP , although there isn't an Android app for greenlight grower it is easy to use as a web page on my android phone, or I can use my phone as a hotspot and use the Trimble tablet.
In an ideal world, Trimble would talk to my agronomy program and automatically recorded what I have done.
This has been half promised on the new one, coming to market, if I understood the spiel correctly.

It was the omni easy plan, they have announced it now so no need to keep quiet. From the demo it seemed very good and would suit our business wel especially with all the extra SFI mapping and evidence based stuff we need.
