Farming will flourish precisely because subs will change emphasis (and be reduced) and allow the younger, enthusiastic and adaptable farmer to have a go
The industry will have different products ---not just food but also ''greening & public access '' in all it's many forms
(Feeling optimistic this morning :))

The older, stuck in their way farmers are fecked then :bag:

As in any walk of life ---the world is constantly evolving (y)
Aye, hemp and wool mills have shut down and been replaced by synthetic materials put together by the children of other countries.

Aye, Marshall, Davy Broom, Leyland, Nuffield to name a few great British exports have all evolved into history.

Aye, Massey, and McCormick have evolved their factories to Europe leaving only the husk of ford assembling components that are actually manufactured in, err, Europe.

Aye, propaganda hasn't already thrown meat to the masses as the root of all ill, while planes, cars, and trucks continue to transport pollution around the planet, while the newly promoted healthy alternatives are grown where forests once thrived, fertilised by petrochemicals and human effluent, drinking water from wells instead of stuff that falls from the sky.

Aye, the world evolves, and the currently UK governors have already thrown us under the bus.

Feeling realistic this morning.

Not young, not old, but pragmatically middle aged.

Are HMG going to let farming go to the wall? Yup out of ignorance rather than antpathy

Have they let it happen before. Yup 1930s.

It isn't a result of Brexit this has been coming forabout 30yrs as the population becomes more and more disconnected from how their food is produced and farming has become more mechanised and specialised.

An honest answer from me says that my sucklers depend on government support to to pay for themselves. Without sufficient subsidies they will go.

I don’t think the gov are interested in keeping farmers in producing a physical product to sell.

I’m not concerned at all for my business as to how subsidies pan out.
Of far greater concern is how trading arrangements are worked out.

I agree with this, though most arable & grazing farms are more dependent on BPS than pigs, poultry, root crops & veg.

A bad trade deal would be the very worst thing for UK Ag. Zero tariffs on imports but full tariffs on exports is the worst case scenario. The end of BPS will be that last straw for many but I agree with @Tim W - a new breed of entrepreneurial farmer will succeed. The government don't explicitly want to let UK Ag fall, they will just leave the market to sort out who survives and who does not.

@DrDunc 's example of the mines and manufacturing isn't a bad one but it does not allow for the way the countryside looks that is still important to the taxpayer, hence all the guff in the Agriculture Bill about pollution, wildlife habitat, ecosystems. Everything except farming other than how they will raise costs (oops sorry) standards of UK produce...

If you read the thoughts on here you’d think the country was doomed.

Actually.....employment at record levels, an exceptionally low level of unemployment (hence the high immigration), wages rising faster than inflation, 5th largest economy in the world. 9th largest manufacturer in the World- not bad for a country that supposedly doesn’t make anything anymore.

Cheer up troops!

Sorry most of those jobs could equally work just as well or better with imported product
If food is imported it will be as the finished product not ingredients, why haul water/by products, non usable bits a distance when you can all justthe bit you sell, the uk is an expensive place to make things so those making the stuff will go too

A combination of events could see your milk price down to 15p/litre in a 6 month period. And you wouldnt be able to do a thing about it! In charge of your own destiny my ****.
why the hell will milk drop to 15 p where are they going to get it from for that price ? Why on earth would NZ for instance give up selling product to asia and return to selling it here when the future trade arrangements are uncertain and nowhere in europe is going to sell it at that price
