Are you all depressed ?

Almost impossible I think. Times have changed and tech is the future good or bad. If you can make crazy money being warm fixing computers or setting them up or whatever they mainly do, Monday to Friday, or at weekends for a crazy on call price, then what’s the attraction to being out in all weathers, covered in sh!t, going home stinking and tired as you’ve been up since 4:30am, stressed cause something’s gone wrong or there’s a test or inspection due, being probably the only industry that can’t pass on costs to the consumer.

I honestly fear for where the next generation will come from.
All the young people I see are dead enthusiastic about careers in Ag, or I wouldn't be seeing them.

You'd have to be a particular kind of masochist to do an Ag degree and not be enthusiastic about a job in the sector...

Are they mainly farmers sons/daughters or a bit of them looking to get into the industry?

When I was at college age, I had no real idea of the costs and real world situations of running a farm. It can come as a bit of a culture shock to the college trained who come hone wanting new everything and the incomings don’t match up to make it all pay.

I'm kind of losing the will.

Think it's a combination of time of year, fert prices and negativity towards agriculture.

Away with family in Edinburgh for a few days is taking mind of things.

Spring always brings a shift in mindset.
I struggle to be away. I'm constantly wondering what I could be doing or should be doing .
OH and me were treated to a night out at the farming awards last Thurs night . All expenses paid with accommodation it was a great night but I still got the OH up at 5.30 cos I wanted to get back and get some work done .
I would love to be able to go away and just relax.

I feel the same! Decided to fill in a FW survey last night with OH (he is the 'main' farmer as well as doing outside work, I also hold a FT job outside) it was the first time I had heard him say he was demoralised and when the question asked what we would be doing in 3 yrs he said 'not farming'. I was actually shocked by this as he is a farmer through and through but we will not be foolish enough to stay in farming if its not a viable business (its to expensive to be a hobby). We are tenant farmers, luckily with very good landlords but going on the incentive payment to leave farming it would only give us a poor years 'wages' but I guess that is better than nothing.

A few years back I went on a trip to the New Holland Basildon plant, plus a night out in London. It was really good fun and good crack, but I lost count of people who were saying they hated the city and couldn’t wait to get back home.

I love getting away and seeing city life or just chilling for a week. Giving my daughter memories she will keep for a lifetime just as I have from when I was a child :)

Can you guys post a list of why you can't get away
My dad was like that , said he would take mum around the world when he retired , mum died at 55 , broke his heart , never did see the world
I love my work and what I do .
I'm already worrying about not being able to work and what on earth will I do with my spare time .
I would love to buy a campervan and just go off for a few days but I just can't bring myself to do it .
I was given 5 yrs to live .....5 yrs ago last Fri . .....I'm still here and am probably fitter now than I was then .
My OH is 5 yrs older than me so I have got to think about that . My father worked his socks off till he retired but mum died within a very short space of time . My FIL was the same he retired and his wife also died shortly after .
My OH was within 10 mins of the end of her life last Feb and I decided to alter things and slow up .......did I ...No .
I love the buzz of business and opportunities and what I can make of them .
Wherever I go I'm constantly looking at what's for sale and can I do something with it .

Not sure if that answers your question or not

More or less my life , but I had to find someway of switching off , I'm away in Brighton for five days with the family and cycling , I left my Excavator stuck in a ditch with the track off , got new tracks and sprockets to fit when I get back , I call my Excavator Marilyn Monroe , that's another thing I do to relax , getting away from theyard and cleaning ditches out

Still wake at 6 thinking what I could be doing. Getting digestate on stubble at home today. Should really be ploughing it in behind them. I agree with farmers on colin's trip. Was sat in a theatre last night with hundreds of people. I would actually class it as a form of torture.

I used to play snooker at County level and I enjoyed that but the eyesight isn't quite like it used to be .
Hearing is pretty poor now with 2 hearing aids so even if we go out I hear bugger all so folks think I'm a miserable old bugger .
🙂🙂
And I suppose those that know me will agree !!

About half and half, lots go on to decent careers.

Does anyone else ever wonder what on earth else you would do if you just jacked in and sold the whole lot? You’d be very comfortable but would still need some form of income if your young.

I was just browsing the other night and a local parcel company were paying £201 per day (9 hours a day) for a man and van. The contract was permanent not Xmas based.

That’s 4K a month in your own account for a Monday to Friday job.
Then you start thinking would I actually be happy? That’s the scary part. Fear of change!

I'd be wary of the figures on a parcel job - the reality will be somewhat different from speaking to quite a few drivers, plus factor in the cost of the van, fuel and insurance & the figures at the end of the month will be somewhat different!

I wouldn't take up a van driving job for all the tea in China. Never worth the stress.

I really need closure on this picture..

After a few months of work has the 6135R turned that frown upside down?

Deliveries of supplies and collection of produce.
Mon to Friday and sometimes Saturday a beet lorry can arrive with half an hours notice.
But once the beet season is over we do like to get away to Sheffield where my Mrs spent most of her career. Still has friends there so useful contacts and somebody to see other than strangers.
I do actually like my work, even though I moan about it. But I like to be either busy with it or not doing it at all. I don’t like jobs that are going at half speed or having to wait around. The Bert factory seems to be running faster now so we are getting it away and can crack on which i prefer.

Seldom log on to TFF but when I do I always check out your posts. You have the most amazing gung ho spirit and it still makes me giggle thinking about when you sold the bales for the work party and they then paid you to take them back plus (I think) gave you some Thatchers.

The hearing aids are very clearly no impediment and I suspect that you will be making hay for many decades to come!
