I bought moderate arable for £1k/acre in - I think- '93.
It remained around that figure for much of the decade. (still kicking myself for not buying the 76 acres opposite for £100k in '98 or '99)

The moral is... you wanted to be selling in in '83, and buying a decade later.

@Clive ......are you too young to have seen this cycle?

Why a decade later 1986 was cheaper to buy a whole farm than the early 90s.

Plenty of good (arable) land that was struggling to find bids of £1000/ac in 1990, before IACS came in.

We bid that on a 500ac block nearby, with cottage, cattle buildings and a half decent corn store/drier. We were the only bid, which sat there for several months before it was withdrawn from the market as nobody would bite higher.
This place was on the market for 11 years previously , no one wanted it.

I feel I can make a small contribution here.

Do you want to know what happens when you ask for mental health help in a small town in the UK?

You know, when you go to the doctor for help.

First up you are offered fluoxetine, as much as you want. Then you get a pile of paperwork to fill in. Your gp asks the mental health specialist if they've got any free time, they don't. Unless you've tried to kill yourself and recently at that. You get a follow up test for whatever you've done to yourself and you get more paperwork to fill in, or not, nobody cares. Turns out there's group therapy, but it's a small town, so you'll have to travel, and, well, that's where I lost interest. Cured, I guess.

Getting help is an underappreciated challenge.
I should also say that the gp was lovely and offered good advice.

it’s such an insular job, the closer to a problem you are the harder it is to see I guess

The demise of the mixed farm often creates an insular operation. If I packed up root crops and livestock, I'd have to farm the combinable bit part time and get a job elsewhere. How bloody dull. As it is, we've 2 full time, 2 regular part time and 4 seasonal workers who all get on, get the work done and enjoy the craic. It's what you make it.

Yes Gp 's can be good .......if they are interested in Mh.
Theres another more suitable thread for you Merino perhaps ?

Most weird thread on TFF for a long time in my book I'm afraid.

I do think that to appreciate the position of someone with genuinely low mood or other mental illness requires two things: insight into that person/their life and also a good deal of empathy. I can't comment on the empathy side of things but this thread does confirm my long-held suspicion that some folk here are from outer space.
