Couple of Welsh lads on here pulling quads on trailer after cattle box on jeep, they must be exempt, then? Or are the smaller trailers different?

From the business cost, a decent bale trailer is 7k or a shagged artic is £1500, and yes by definition if a trailer was chosen not to be run on and mot’d the reason was the mot was going to be costly.
Last one we did was a 45ft step frame bought for £3000 with 6months plate on it and it was one of the cleanest trailers I have ever seen, cut the step off put a drawbar in it , had it sand blasted and painted and it looks like a new trailer , total cost for 3axle trailer on air sup and air brakes only £6000

seems a shame to start cutting it up when you could just put a dolly on it

Dolly can't be detachable, otherwise classed as two trailers, therefore it is classed as the second trailer loaded once you put a load on.

And trailers that have been subject to MOT, must still be MOT'd. Not exempt just because a tractor is towing it.
I asked the vosa man about mot my trailer when i was pulled in to a test centre for a check he said he wasn't sure how he could as was pulling it with tractor.

I bought the three m+g step frames here,

Sold one and will put Drawbars into the others, gave just under 5 k for them but will be great trailers when done.

Your local HGV garage would have to take it on their tractor unit.

I don't wish to contradict anyone but in 2017 I took a number of trailers for test at VOSA test stations behind an air braked year 1999 Case MX135.
These were single axle cable drum trailers rated at 10t which because they were normally towed on the road behind lorries had to be tested.
The test station was quite happy to test the trailers this way.
