Such a scheme wouldn't push production up drastically, it would keep more people on the land and in rural communities, at the expense of the land hungry 'uber-efficient' ones.

It just might mean the environment gains permanently, rather than vast tracts of land being dumped in and out of SFI schemes when it suited with commodity prices? It's no good encouraging fauna one year, then starving it the next.

Do you think recent livestock prices are 'getting to where they should be', or just a short term spike on the back of local shortages? Personally, I think the summer will see a return to normality, but happy to sell you a flock of sheep if you think otherwise. :)
Lamb price is probably about where it should be but well above where it will be. The spike can only be short lived when there is such a gulf between prices here and southern hemisphere that cant seem to give lamb away right now. Over Easter supermarkets seemed to be giving away UK lamb for less than they paid for it :scratchhead:

if you are paid by the government to be a farmer you ARE a public servant .......... juts like bin men are

what UK farmers need is a fair price for their food, this need to be done by protecting them from lower welfare / environmental standard import and law that make buying from a farmer at less than cost of production illegal and hard regulation of supermarkets that makes buying UK in preference to imports law ........... it's that simple and need not cost the tax payer a single £
Not sure you will find a single MP to agree with that... they are almost from the free market, import cheap, export services school of economics... :cautious:

ive personally had i think 4 years out of 35+ that id call a decent income...
The rest as you clearly state its pride & just keeping the wolves from the door.
That's the truth of it 🥺
No bugger else would live like it 😱
I had a Barney with my sister about it ....
It wasn't pretty 🤬
Problem is everything is worth so much and those looking in just think of the money but not seeing the cost to run and live...

So so very true
Iam a Tenant you get one shot at this its only mine as long as i can justify me being here otherwise thats it i leave or get told too leave
Not so much the later being on a AHA thankfully but mind some days i feel like saying the wrong things to the higher powers...
So many things i cant do with it not being mine which is what it is.

But back to the OP the idea sounds wonderfull but impossible to implement & thats as far as it will ever go
Its a fantasy dream that has so many pitfalls its a waste of time from the outset.

Dont worry Clive you have my backing on this one :X3:

Why don't we all just ask for our farms to be nationalised while we are at it hey ! ............ what a utterly stupid idea this is
I thought you said 30 % or something like that of your patch was already " nationalised " and management on the rest influenced practically and financially by the state already .

How is it like nationalising farms in any way?
You efficient go-getters, who claim you don't need subsidy, can still forge ahead with scrapping over any land. You might even find those little farms that would flourish, or at least survive, under this scheme, might want to buy feed in from you.
they import perfect flowers from the professionals in Holland already though

How do you work that out ? although I agree with the theory -it will cost them as their food will be dearer as a consequence and their properties will be worth less and their rents /mortgage payments will have to be less as a consequence .
Its all about buying votes ultimately with someone elses money/costs as a consequence .

food will not cost more, this (flawed) argument makes farmers look very silly

food prices are dictated by global markets NOT uk subsidies

there are no food shortages

good luck convincing tax payers that they need to subsidies food production when it’s cheap and available

as for your other point I think most people would rather live near / have access to fields full of wildflowers and nature than they would a productive arable field where multiple synthetic inputs are used - i suspect that helps property prices

Of course it will cost more - you are suggesting "protectionist " legislation potentially excluding mainstream global market food products from our national market place ( be a better idea , " greener " than SFI and fairer /better for the economy than any sub system ) .
It would cost the consumer more very directly and consequently and political party that implemented it .
I am not trying to sell subs - but politicians have" to go round the houses and pass the buck " to survive , rather than say it how it is .

Yes I am quite sure the local caravan dwellers will love having some new residential opportunities and be able to conveniently pursue their rural pastimes /business interests with their pets without damaging anyones property or stock/crops .
