We have a block of land which is due to be spring beans next year. Trouble is that it is wet and rented. We have hss beans but don't fancy harvesting them late so looking at wholecrop options. We have our own baler and wrapper and it is only 27ac. We would feed it to our beef finishers through the Keenan. Any ideas.

If it's any consolation, I'm planning on doing it with peas... very good carb & protein for cattle (y)
Can your baler chop?
From my (limited) research, they say to mow it at least 4 inches high, and don't turn it, to avoid "ground contamination", I'm guessing from N leaching.
Inoculant is preferable too.

Let us know how it goes, please!

No chopper on the baler but the mixer has blades. We used to grow peas but this block is away from home and close to lots of houses. I wouldn't like to leave a banger there.

I feel your pain, I have been doing an awful lot of shotgunning in mine (for lambing) and the neighbour's have stopped waving to me!!

It should make good wholecrop though, I would think?
Not too sure how much I'd take out of my comment of mowing it high, either, as you'd likely miss a fair amount if it's lodged? But I thought I'd pass it on anyway, give your post a bit of a bump... (y)

Hopefully, someone who knows more will reply, as I'm usually the guy baling someone's crop; not the other way around.
Still, all the literature I found on google said to try to get inoculant onto it, don't think my local contractor has an applicator so I may need to be creative there..

big thing will be if doing bales is to make the bales tight and well wraped if late cut and stems firm it will be full of air
moco and bale out of the row will help keep dirt out
if like clovers etc will be low in suger so a bitch to get it to silage so pick hot sunny days to get a good wilt

I have some oats so I could drill them with the beans? It's a belt baler so I can get them tight. We only have a narrow disc only mower so I think a grouper would make a better job.

For what it's worth, I hope to have a bit of grass in with mine to fill the air-gaps with something.
I do think something else in there would be advisable, as I've baled some cracking wholecrop bales (with knives in the baler) that didn't really ensile well as expected, went quite mouldy apparently, I didn't ever see but pub talk...
Whether it's oats, or IRG or a bit of both.
Something will like the N.

oats or a grass will help in the mix with sugers also help fill in the air gaps a bit

Give Michael Carpenter at kelvin cave a try. I was advised to ring him as we tried bean wholecrop this year, he's been very helpful getting us set off. A chopper wouldnt really chop the actual beans unless they were really wet, our contractor tried without the mill in the forager but was no good.
Stalky things may puncture wrap?
