Were you pleased with your trade on Tuesday?
You sound like you’ve had a good do to me!
It was ok,but they were quite good hoggs. They were ewe ones so i hoped someone would buy them for keepers.I know the £94 ones definately were.I think there were some ewe North Cheviots passed out at £97.Some of mine would probably have gone in the fat,but i didnt want to hang around all day today.Last thursday when i got back home,i lost a ewe on its back:(

Who’s buying stores now? Just the usual crew? I never hardly stop to watch anything through the fat or stores now and haven’t for years now

JE and Tony England the most, and Harker who i dont know, but came up as Potter on the payslip.Gittens has stopped on a Tuesday, but buys on a Thursday instead. The store is just about finished now.Dont think they will have many next week.Anything i have left now will go in the fat,but could be June before some bought Swales go in.

John might have some roots to use up as he shifted a lot of sheep early on.
Tony will likely be buying for his usual men.
I will still have some to go in June as usual

Often the best payers those very late sold Hoggs cost little to run through and bought for pennies.
Sorry, wash my mouth out, they should have all been sold before Christmas as they spoil the spring lamb trade :banghead:

Yes it’s the cost that can make the profit deceiving. If they are on £1 a week keep and hoppers they need to be dear to break even. There’s a few dead ones to pay for too + medicine and haulage it all adds up

I don’t like putting hoppers out on keep as I feel I’m leaving to much good sh!t on someone else’s land. Also tend to pay for keep by the acre rather than per head, can then put as little or as many as I want on to suit the conditions and time of year

Yes I agree. Also if they are eating cake they can’t eat grass if it’s on headage. Paying twice springs to mind. More doable though if you turn tens of thousands of them over. A few pounds profit on that lot is well worth it at the end of season not so much if it’s hundreds or low 000s of lambs though

I’m in the hundreds bracket but like to make at least a tenner or more a head clear profit and as they say “the sh1!s for free”

I just needed it to be 1000s instead of 100s and i might get somewhere:)
One year possibly 8/9 years ago I did around 6/700 and I couldn’t go wrong. They all made three times what I valued them at or paid for them in the backend. I even bought some February and March and sold them a month later off only grass for double the money.
The next year I did 3000 and it wasn’t such a good year. They hardly lifted. 20 k keep bill 6k haulage and all the work.
The profits for both years ended up about the same. I think everyone was thinking the same thing

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
