One year possibly 8/9 years ago I did around 6/700 and I couldn’t go wrong. They all made three times what I valued them at or paid for them in the backend. I even bought some February and March and sold them a month later off only grass for double the money.
The next year I did 3000 and it wasn’t such a good year. They hardly lifted. 20 k keep bill 6k haulage and all the work.
The profits for both years ended up about the same. I think everyone was thinking the same thing
I think 2011 was a good year, and the first year ever i think i hit over £100/head for hoggs.2012 was different and i remember scraping £80 or so for my best, and Archie Hamilton shouting out to anyone that would complain that they were too heavy.

Archie was ringing every week asking what we had coming and they were going up all the time well towards the end of May. I remember saying I would keep hold of a fair few if he thought they were going to go up, he replied ‘how much do you bloody want for these sheep’ I’m sure they were 220 240 ish

The big loss years of F&M and BSE were the killers when you were selling them for half what you paid for them :poop::banghead::cry:
Yes I was selling a few cattle in the fat and they were my own beast still lost money on them just with the cost of the feed. Same with f & m. It was hopeless when everything had to go dw.

Just crunched some numbers on my new season lambs to get an idea when they it 42kg.

Based upon two references weighs 3 weeks apart.

Most will be there by the end of July, far quicker than last year by the looks of things.

what was approx birth date jerry ?

Started on 12th Feb but peak lambing was two weeks later.

So far they’ve been on grass only.

Top weight was 36kg yesterday for a single that is doing 0.6kg a day at the moment.

Got a few very slow growers mainly due to ewes with little milk or mastitis.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
