I have a fair few too.
Never panic. There’s the festival’s to come. There’s less sheep about than there used to be 20 years ago when they always fell off a cliff in May, when a lot more big flocks of sheep lambed really early. Hoggs have been holding value into June and later. I know because I always have some to sell then. It can settle down. There’s not the sheep about. In hindsight they have probably been paying too much for them for too long and what a great week to not buy any rather than putting them up anot25p per kilo, which is what would have happened if things had carried on normally.
Well the main thing is that we can hopefully sell them at a half decent price

They always drop in April/May every year when they are f**king about changing to new season then go back up again when they realise there’s not enough of them about. They are well practiced. I got told Dumbia was shut yesterday then someone else on here had been there and said it was open then I got a call saying they wanted no more hoggs after Wednesday. I will believe what’s happening after Wednesday. You can’t believe anything you hear at the minute

Exactly what I say but in general purchasers dont want to and will not spend that kind of money on a home cooked meal. Spoke to a friend at the weekend who thought her £10 joint of beef was extremely extraordinary (while driving a top end car and nice home etc) I will be interesting to see whether peoples weekly shop will increase or whether the booze side will fill the luxuries of not doing anything at the weekend or having a meal out. Food gaps can be filled with pork snacks and confectionery. Lets not forget a good % of the pop dont want to cook or we could see a massive spike in the readymade meal side. ANyway be interesting to see the trends.
I’ve been thinking this. Lots of my extended family are self employed in all sorts of industries and are being effectively laid off or works dried up. They will be looking to eat beans on toast before an expensive leg of lamb .

OK, conspiracy theory time.

A big powerful firm like McDonalds appear to have had the'inside track' on what's going to happen.

The supermarkets are now the governments 'blue-eyed boys' (they've been allowed to ignore all competition laws etc and exchange sensitive information because Boris and Co see them as the only way to ensure the nation gets fed.)
So supermarkets are sure to know that livestock markets are going to be shut very soon.

It would certainly not be in their interests to end markets with the record prices that we've seen in the last couple of weeks as that would set a dangerous precedent for what we could argue we should be paid when deadweight is our only option.

So, they 'knock their heads together', and lop 30 or 40 quid off a hogg overnight. When Boris shuts markets down, in the next few days, they've now got a much more lucrative market price (for them) to use to base their d/w offers on.

Remind anybody of F&M??
Maybe not conspiracy, but certainly coordinated action. I was saying to dad when picking steers on Friday that the actions over the next few days would set the price for the summer - seems lamb buyers had the same collective thoughts.

Well what a mess....

Health comes first and foremost that's a given..

I always find that any given group of hoggs which I am showing live can stand a couple of weeks at the point without going wrong....

I have hoggs pretty much there... And spring lambs motoring...

As an industry should this not be the time that we all go into "lock down" and send nothing.....

It needs everyone to stay at home..

I mean let's not give them away...
Hold firm boys n gals

Granted demand is down and borders may or may not be closed.. And prob money going forward for households is tight..

For me it's time to put on our best poker face.

Stay safe.. Look after your loved ones

I must admit, I thought similar as I watched events unfold at St Boswells yesterday.

Sorry read that wrong. Self employed will be getting a payment so I’ve been told but it’s harder for government to calculate a system

There's Ramadan starting in a few weeks, hopefully you will be fine. The hogg demand will be from the ethnic trade as others will move on to lambs slowly.

We sold all ours by last October (gave some away) due to the Brexit date etc. I was kicking myself last week when prices rocketed. That's sheep farming unfortunately.

Stay healthy and happy that is the important part.
