HEREFORD & BUILTH WELLS MARKETS

Sunderland's have purchased Brightwells share in HMA to take full control of Hereford market and have taken on the lease of Builth market. Sunderland's will also continue running Talgarth market.

Great to see Sunderland's commitment to livestock markets, hopefully they will have 3 flying markets on the Welsh borders.

Might be a good idea if they keep moving further west as well.

UC will be far less costly than furlough for the government However I would expect UC and furlough to be very fluid going forward

It all must be flexible, and not cause financial shocks. Physics of plate spinning, and diabolos, and juggling with chainsaws turned into economics.

There’
Your the idiot who’s taking it off topic all the time, no one else raises this stuff and makes up the Bs that you do on this tracker and then conveniently says “back on topic please” when your called out. Stay on topic or don’t post but ffs you do ruin the thread at times.

Full Details Of Sunderlands Expansion etc:

TERMS AGREED FOR SUNDERLANDS TO PURCHASE BRIGHTWELLS STAKE IN

HEREFORD MARKET AUCTIONEERS

Terms have been agreed between Sunderlands 1862 LLP (Sunderlands) and Brightwells Ltd (Brightwells) for the purchase by Sunderlands of Brightwells’ minority shareholding in Hereford Market Auctioneers (HMA).

HMA has been holding livestock sales at the Roman Road Livestock Market since 2011, having had a presence in the city under Royal Charter for well over 150 years. The largest auction centre for the sale of farm livestock on the Welsh borders, the company has been under the direction of Sunderlands and Brightwells, with Sunderlands holding a majority share.

With both companies focussing on their strategic vision for the future, it has also been agreed that Builth Market will come under the umbrella of HMA’s activities, running alongside Talgarth Market, so creating a thorough regional coverage for livestock auctioneering.

Commenting on the acquisition, the Directors of Sunderlands released the following statement;

“Sunderlands continue to look to the future with the expansion of our livestock business. Sunderlands mergers and acquisitions continue with the largest yet in the purchase of Brightwells livestock business comprising their shares in HMA and the lease of Builth Wells Market. Previous acquisitions have included Hammonds (previously part of HMA), HP Barnsley, Thompsons, Springfield Property and Turner & co.

The current situation has underlined how important it is to have a thriving home grown food industry and with this in mind Sunderlands took the view to invest further in HMA and take on Builth Wells market to add to Talgarth market which also takes place every Friday. Powys has the highest density of sheep in the world and therefore further investment in this crucial part of the food chain would seem obvious to expand our part of the promotion of British Agriculture.

Sunderlands offer a full range of professional services including Residential, Rural and Commercial agency together with the livestock auctioneering department”

Joint Managing Directors, Nick Gorst and Richard Binnersley, of Brightwells said:

“Brightwells Livestock is a fantastic business and we are proud of the role it has played in our 174-year history. This sale of the livestock enterprise will allow us to focus and redeploy resources in our already established markets, such as Rural Professional Services, and develop into new ones. We believe that selling our share in the HMA business to Sunderlands and with Builth Market joining HMA that this transaction can only benefit the industry.”

Bakewell Market Mon 6th July

Another busy day at Bakewell with 544 Cattle and 1233 Sheep on offer, substantially more cattle than a year ago and evidence that new vendors are finding their way to Bakewell and appreciating both the trade and the service. Thank you for your support.

Busiest section was the Store Cattle department with 330 head on offer which included a consignment over 50 young bulls from Messrs Porter Brothers of Teversal. These attracted a great deal of interest and started the sale in style. The store cattle trade has evidentially moved up another notch with Steers to £1270, Heifers to £1200 and Young Bulls to £1010 for the first pen of Porter Bros.

There were good things to report about the finished cattle trade. The 96 on offer sold to 229p and £1447. The average for the 36 heifers was 201.2p and even more noteworthy was the overall average of 191.3p a very respectable figure.

82 OTM and Feeding Cows this week and an excellent trade all through. The figures 166p and £1665 with the overall average a healthy 131.4p.

Calf numbers back a bit at 36 with Bulls to £280 and Heifers £195.

In the sheep department not quite as many lambs as last week at 738. Top figures 270p and £122.36 per head, the sqq average looked good at 222.7 pence.

Ewes peaked at £157 and averaged a very decent £86.69.

We'd a 6yr old barren pure blonde cow in, made 157p which we were pleased with.

Whitland calf sale report for yesterday off their Facebook page.

Trade was off the chain in my eyes with prices dearer than its been these past weeks, it felt like this was the last ever calf sale the way people were bidding!

Whitland Calf and Weaned Calf Sale

Tuesday 7th July 2020

Calves (298)

Whitland’s calf trade broke new boundaries again this week. Firstly we congratulate and welcome long time servant of JJ Morris, Dafydd Walters to the auctioneering fraternity who debuted in the calf ring and did a wonderful job, complemented by both vendors and buyers for his efforts.

Secondly it was week 1 of the Angus sired calves promotion sponsored by the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society. And what a day to have Angus sired calves. Top 10 Angus bull calves were over £240 with the top 5 counting down at:
5. £255 Davies, Treforris Fawr
4. £275 x2 Davies Penlan Ltd; Cilfeithy Farm Service
3. £285 Houlbrooke Ffoswinau Farm
2. £290 Howells, Nantygof
1. £300
And top spot, a society Rosette and £50 prize money went to a super bull calf (see photos) from Thomas Ltd, Penlan Home Farm that sold at £300 to Wilson, Coombe Farm.

And last but not least the superb overall trade of the day. “Flying trade”, “Wild trade”, or very neatly put “clean off trade” were just some comments picked out on today’s trade. Almost 20% of the beef calves were over £300 mark and top price of the day was surely a market record with a cracking shaped, month old Blue bull calf (see photos) selling for a whopping £550.

Friesian bull calf trade may have been easier than recent weeks but still a strong trade with top of £230 and average of £68.

Fr Bulls £68.
