Not too unusual with hill breeds - beauty is in the eye of the beholder, etc . . . Sometimes buyers are looking to get in to certain "blood" lines or maybe different folk are looking for different things e g teeth, conformation , skin and so on!! :)
4/5 years ago the first prize swale tup in Bentham was pretty much a smart looking ewe with balls. I felt sorry for the vendor really, he was so proud of it and when it went in the ring he couldn’t get a bid above £250 I think it was. He took it home.

I bought second prize pen of dales mules yesterday, can’t help but think how disappointing that was for the breeder. 😂

Just found the September HCC Bulletin email, rather than trying to remember what was said at the meeting. The bulletin sheep market comment read as this:

-Total sheep throughput at UK abattoirs stood at just over 1.1 million head for August – down 19.0% on the year. Within this, lamb throughput was down 19.5% on the year at 997,700 head – which is also down 20.3% on 2019. Despite the decrease in throughput, the average carcase weights were up 0.6kg on the year at 19.8kg. Cull ewe and ram throughput numbers also fell by 14.3% on the year to 105,200 head. The total volume of sheepmeat produced during August decreased by 17.6% on the year to 22,500 tonnes. Looking at the first 8 months of this year, total sheep throughput was currently down 12.3% on the year, whilst production decreased by 11.3%
I wonder how much of that was due to EID being celebrated in July this year instead of August as it was last year?

Are you sure I can’t tempt you?
Cheviot mules and scotch mules all born on one Northumberland farm never been mixed with any other sheep (or each other for that matter) they’d keep you on your toes and give your dogs something to think about.
I was told by my lambing staff to never mention the C word again after 24 last year that made up a lorry load
