So are the exlana's better than you thought they'd be ? Or aren't your Charollais as good as you make out ? 😂

They are fleshing (over the loin at least) better than I expected, yes. Still a country mile behind the Charollais crosses, but then surely you can’t really compare a terminal to a maternal breed on those traits? Horses for courses.

A more interesting comparison perhaps, is the Exlana crosses vs the Highlander crosses, from the same ewes? I have to admit the Exlanas win on that score (but not for maternal traits ime).

Just seen darlington suckled calf report....some vendors over £100 up on the year.
Very misleading what we read on this forum sometimes about trade being in the doldrums!
Two good sales tomorrow too, welshpool and knighton. Darlington must have had a crazy sale last year to only just beat it this year on average, i would expect most commercial suckled calf sales this year to be £100 dearer p/head than last year.

Beggars belief that anyone could arse on breeding something for a year or two years up to sale and can’t be bothered to ring up before sale days!!

Why would you ring up for fat lamb trade? We all know what the trade is nationally at any time now, and I can’t think of any auctioneer that would say not to bring them in tbh. :scratchhead:
I’m not sure I’d ask most auctioneers what the time was, without having a watch to check if it was right.🤐

I always ring up before taking something. Only courteous to the auctioneer/market but mainly to make sure he has enough buyers with enough capacity for the numbers he's expecting.

No good a market having 3000 lambs in if they've only got buyers that want 2000.
We've got to help them to help us.

not much in it twixt lots

A kilo heavier and £2/hd less. About par for the course for anything other than those exceptional shaped lambs that only come with considerable costs attached ime.

The simple fact is that we are all trying to breed E grade lambs, but the market just doesn’t reward them sufficiently. Is it worth the effort?

I’ve never considered my little lot would make a lot of difference tbh, getting dropped into a big mart.
I can see the point if taking a lorry load into a little mart that only gets 500 lambs on a good week.

Depends if the E grades are singles....might be better with two 'plain' R/O grades

Maybe they don’t like you?
Are you saying you send stock to the mart without ringing to find out what trade there is for what you are selling?
I’m always amazed when other people in the same job ask me what trades doing because they have no fecking idea!! How they produce something an don’t know what the price is doing for their product just bewilders me!
My local auctioneer been on phone tonight to talk trade an see what I’m up to/ what I’ve got, an yes he’s rang before now an said don’t bring them the jobs over done! I suppose it’s all about the relationship you have with your auctioneer!!

I'll happily take £2 up
Was told the middle range cattle would take the biggest rise ......mainly due to the fact the best were so bloody dear last year 🤣😂

nope 22kg R3L will do me most of the time a few premium lambs are a nice bonus but 50% oif my lambs are produced to hit supermarket spec as quickly as possible at the lowest cost that I can achieve 10% may achieve a premium price (heavyweight or quality ) and the remainder will be the profit 🤣

Saw the report on facebook. I reckoned by the time you took the showstoppers out the average the bullock calves would be a bit below £3/kg which is a good bit less than they were up here a month ago.

I may have been helped by following a pen of what I presumed were Swiss Valais crosses..
Very tall, narrow overweight sheep with open coats, backbones sticking up proud and wobbly fat. Marvellous specimens.🤐
