All in jest Neil! We have been lucky here in North Devon with a near perfect summer and autumn. Even heavy rain last week has done us sheep boys a favour in driving the cattle indoors and freeing up some sheep keep! I will post a picture of my own lamb's on roots.

I can't see there being much sheep keep spare round here. Dairy cows are all still out, as well as the followers.

Our drains aren't even running yet, and running around with the tractor without leaving a mark. Tried to push some fence posts in with the Merlo earlier, and stopped at a foot!

According to AHDB the SQQ at Carlisle was 301p. I've just had an email from Kirkby Stephen saying lambs are going to be in extreme demand tomorrow🔥🔥
Sounds like the phone call that went out for Kirkby suckled calves the other week
“No one coming they’ll be cheaper”
Get there and every fudger is there saying they all got the same phone call!

I just don't believe they are out there in huge numbers , be that beef or lamb , there is a large number of farmers these days that don't want to lamb ewes or calf cows ,they just don't want the graft that goes with it, and a lot would be because of an ageing workforce
they are out there , a lot of catch crops gone in that need eating off (and dairy keep) that grew well this autumn , turned my ram lambs into 6-7" of red clover today it was nearly cuttable ,and will prob get another quick rotation on what they have already been on if frost stays away , turnip / rape/ wheat/ barley is growing well for next move after that .

Could well be less of a trade than now .

I wouldn't want to post such comments and be accused of talking trade down...

Or trolling

I normally sell all fat, for every fat lamb I've sold this year I've sold 3 or 4 store. I'd guess about 1/2 of those store are now hung up (or should be!)... so without doing the actual numbers you could probably say 1/3 of my lambs are still to be killed that I've sold (and would normally already be killed).

If that's a common trend across enough farms with others taking advantage of store trade... it could bugger the March/April/May trade.
Hopefully not, but I'm glad it's not my skin in the game speculating and hats off to those who take the chance each year

Grandad reckons every time he can remember the trade pre Christmas (bar last year) being good, he’s had his backside kicked with those he’d held on too until February onwards. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Be nice if it doesn’t turn out like that this time but it’s happened all before. Think we’ll start drawing this week. If job does fold a bit I’ll have extra crop left too hang fire with for a while.

Oh Jesus no!! 😂 we’ve 1100 homebred texel and beltex cross lambs too sell before we get too the bought in lambs! Then there’s the cross and Cheviot lambs before we touch the horned lambs. Apart from the tup lambs inside that is. These should be anywhere from 42-50kg

Huge numbers of dairy cows for sale so something will be needed to eat the grass before its maybe ploughed up in the spring. I should think cull cow trade will drop with many of these dairy cows going to end up culled to. Even without any environmental pressure to reduce cattle numbers i can see a huge reduction in cattle being bred in the uk because of the loss of huge numbers of cows, both dairy and suckler .

Input costs are killing them for one , labour shortages and lack of decent contract/milk buyer. Over 300 herds sold in the last 12 mths with trade being pretty good on them but that has changed now, the average and also rans are for nothing.
