Same could be said for those that buy it at any price and then stock prices/corn drops. Both are a gambleA lot of folks that cut fert or cut fert out this spring will be in for a shock in 2023
I moaned plenty about the cost of store lambs this last 2 years…I’ve yet to meet one person complain about lamb price in the last year. If you cant make good money at sheep this year you never will. But then I’m just a hill farmer with plain sheep so what do I know
You can grow a crop on your p and k reservoir for a year but there’s often not much left in the tank the year afterSame could be said for those that buy it at any price and then stock prices/corn drops. Both are a gamble
I can’t afford the hoppers like some people I know…You could put hoppers out everywhere then you are doing both. Feeding sheep and fertilising as well!!!
That’s what cow sh!t is for!!You can grow a crop on your p and k reservoir for a year but there’s often not much left in the tank the year after

No the sheep are just a hobby to be honest
Well the Zwartbles and Charollais are anyway
Should have sold them 7kg ago at £3+…42 x £2.60 £109 not really anything to get excited about
Yes , I know, but the deal on offer was £30 less per lamb for £200 fert and half price fuel ......I wasn’t for quibbling about the detail I just shook the mans handWhich is fine, but you can really attribute the cost of all your fertiliser and diesel to them in that case. Unless you’re trying to make an arable enterprise look good of course.
I know most of my input costs are down to the arable here, certainly not the baa baas.
Then after 3 years too many people have done just that, BOOM eggs drop too a new low and leave you scratching your head trying too sweet talk the bank manager! Then you read farmers weekly and someone has put in 64,000 hen laying places to future proof the business
if you only take one cut and put on dung every year, you dont need to buy in any p and k. i havent bought any for over a decade and it hasnt affected the soil or yieldYou can grow a crop on your p and k reservoir for a year but there’s often not much left in the tank the year after

So would I! And then resell it at £600/t on 120t thats £48k profit as opposed to the £30/lamb for 1,000 lambs. Double or quits?Yes , I know, but the deal on offer was £30 less per lamb for £200 fert and half price fuel ......I wasn’t for quibbling about the detail I just shook the mans hand
I haven’t got any that heavy!!!Should have sold them 7kg ago at £3+…
Same here, but only last five years, takes a couple of years to adjust but boy does it feel goodif you only take one cut and put on dung every year, you dont need to buy in any p and k. i havent bought any for over a decade and it hasnt affected the soil or yield
What? No 7kg lambs? What you feeding? Massey’s finest sawdust??I haven’t got any that heavy!!!
Think most of the fertiliser factories are getting passed their sell by date & need 100% replacements or colossal investment to see them through another 20yrs either way it's mega bucksI think there is a lot more to this Fert job than just the price of gas pushing prices up so high!
There is conversation paymentsRead my post above, their numbers will drop severely unless they already have clover rich leys and don’t use much fert anyway. Plus there is little incentive with no payments for converting now and all organic environmental schemes not taking new contracts and I don’t know of many meat buyers wanting more organic produce either
I thought they’d finished years ago, it was circa £150/acre when we turnedThere is conversation payments
