Sedge report 21/01/17
What a day and record trades in the store cattle and store lamb pens!
Store cattle, on what was a very cold day outside the market around the ring side shorts and sun glasses were the order of the day with the strength of the trade will smaller/2nd grade cattle were UP again on the week with small 18/20 month old dairy bred native named sired heifers looking exceptionally well sold with many 350/400 kilo animals well over £750/800 head, again slightly bigger sized dairy bred cont steers were easily £900/ head +, Again several superb runs of well bred/ farmed Fri steers anywhere between £900/1000 head, many many runs of well bred suckler steers anywhere form £1150 to £1400 head.
They say lightning never strikes twice, well this is the third week in a row that lightning strikes the store cattle ring at sedgemoor, get those stores tested and in the ring whilst trade is red hot because as this cold weather drags on into weeks and not days and with quotes for straw now in three figures for part of the Westcountry this trade surely cannot last.
Stirks, a very short entry of around 300 head sold to a packed ringside, trade for decent/ well bred suckler bred cattle was as strong as previous weeks and some small char suckler bred steers looked exceptionally well sold at £780+, again another very strong trade for Fri steers, overall trade was as strong as previous weeks with the exception of very poorly/ small bred cattle that were a slightly easier trade.
Calves, a very disappointing entry of only 350 head sold to a pack ringside and with numbers short trade was much stronger with some buyers claiming it was £30/40 head UP on previous weeks.
Store lambs, Again What a trade with pen after pen of medium keep lambs around the £64/65 head mark, very few lambs below £55 head, with grass short and cake expensive now is the time to sell your store lambs.
Fodder, Sadly due to technical issues aka @farmerclare yapping away ( despite @Henarar trying to keep her quiet ) most prices couldn't be heard but a few prices of note, delivered 4 string barley straw £17.50 a bale and delivered 6 string wheat straw at £21.50 bale.
