He is going into liquidation, any limited company wanting to wind up has to do this it is different to insolvency. I'm not saying whether everyone will be squared up or not,I don't know, and on paper he lost money the last two years but he hasn't gone bust

As far as I know he will continue trading until Friday presumably to clear all stock. I think the costs of upgrading the ageing plant and seeing no real future in the job with no successor I think I would have made the same decision and got out. The site still has development value. I can't help but feel it could be the beginning of the end of more markets though.

As a farmer and meat wholesaler I see things from both sides. Independent abattoirs that have to compete with supermarkets for stock then have to sell the meat to butchers/ farm shops/ depots and worst case scenario Smithfield market are really struggling with spiralling costs and a declining customer base. I know as a farmer I want as much for my stock but without competition in the market place the supermarkets will be in total control. We've seen recently Dawn taking over Dunbia which just means less buyers.
Farmers need to support the independent abattoirs as when they are all gone or all in the hands of the muslims (as a local one here has gone ) we will kick ourselves
