Does he really do that many? Where does he send them?

No I do not do that number of cattle.

Only have suckler bred bulls and no Fri cross cattle anymore, be that bulls or steers! have switched breeds last year away from finishing Fri steers as implementing a new feeding system for everything but suckler bulls from this summer!

Abp were 3.54 for young bulls when I asked about a week to 10 days ago, £3 for cows. Lorry driver said he has only been getting half loads to go down this last while when it’s normally full.

Local place paid £3.66 for clean last week. Struggling to find cattle.
Jesus there giving a fair whack for cows!!

How long ago did Fri bulls? I remember dad doing them years ago now. Just think if it would be something to reconsider doing?

Figures don't stack up for Fri bulls unless you can access a lot of cheap food/ straw!

Another problem is that now the quality of Fri cattle coming out of the dairy herd is so bad you will struggle to get good grades, especially when you compare Fri cattle today v Fri cattle a few years ago when your dad was doing them.

Also Fri bull calves if any good are making nearly as much as native bred cattle that can be/grown finished far cheaper but still make as much if not more than Fri bulls.

If you want to do Fri cattle I would stick with keeping them as steers and getting them to 700 kilo liveweight as weight is what pays with them.

Also very few people want Fri bulls so make sure you have somewhere to send them before you get many about.

Are you down with TB a lot?

Fri steers that have a bit of shape about them and are farmed well will always sell well at Sedge to Northern buyers, last year week after week quite often on a per kilo and age like for like v Lims etc the Fri steers would actually make more money.

Doesn't take much of a Fri steer to make £790+ and quite often they have pen after pen £950/1000+

What type of Fri cows do you have?

A good 16 month old Fri steer will easily make £700+

Call me a cynic but could this be why ABP are suddenly lifting prices?

I'm going back for some more punishment next Monday. Trying 5 Angus heifers, they have maybe got a bit fat for their size.

I’ve got some Angus heifers here I don’t know whether to sell as stores or pump some feed in them and put them on the hook. Let us know how you get on.
