As the above rubbish is the line they love to spout all the time!

Much better if someone cannot afford British lamb to eat British pork instead !

A fendt salesman would not say : its better that they drive a Zetor than no tractor at all if they cannot afford a fendt ...
No. Of course i would prefer if they ate British lamb. Or Welsh would be even better.
But if they don't eat Australian lamb they might not eat lamb at all. Once they stop eating lamb because they can't afford it they are unlikely to start again and will maybe never buy it again. Once you've decided you can't afford something why would you even look at it? I won't even look at fendt prices because I know I can't afford one.
British lamb is still seen as the premium product. They can still trade up if they can afford it. Whether we like it or not lamb is seen as a luxury treat by a lot only eaten at special occasions like Easter. But once that customer is lost they might be lost forever be a job to get them back once they've decided they cant afford it. Not much use them using pork as that treat they might use pork every time.
Them eating pork is no good to me I don't keep pigs.

You are absolutely correct. In the days of old when New Zealand frozen lamb came here people became used to eating it all the year round and the Kiwi's spent lots of money on advertising which we never did!

absolutely agree , except i wont put up with supply brought in to keep the price down , when we are expected to be part of Red Tractor as a condition of selling direct (not forgetting other on farm regulation like deadstock removal) ,for supplying certain supermarkets , If supply standards are the same and we are equal to import , fine we will compete with whatever comes in . The main issue is double standards and that goes right across the food sector .

the nub of the issue , quite simple really , drop red tractor and any assurance that puts us at a disadvantage , why should i be barred from deadweight selling when the same abattoirs are cutting and packing meat with assurance from NZ thats practically a tick box exercise.
No different from grain , its all about restrictive markets and controlling the price in domestic supply , not safety / quality of the product

Is it a premium product though ? look in the shopping trolly of those that say they can't afford it I wouldn't mind betting that you will see some right over priced sh1t in SOME of them, No for the quality of food that it is lamb is not expensive on the other hand UPF is expensive at any price cos its sh1t

My initial reaction was a negative one, but after giving it some thought, I tend to agree.

Was it Steve Jobs or someone that said something along the lines of "it's better for consumers to own another brand of smartphone, than no smartphone at all"

It's better that they eat foreign lamb, than no lamb at all as it shows they have a taste for it. It is then down to us to market british lamb better and produce a superior product.
