Best alternative to OSR for a fuel oil crop

I alluded to this in the thread on Red Diesel tax rebate.

With the dreaded FB so prevalant now making OSR a tough crop to grow, is there any good combineable alternative to it for UK conditions?

Last time I looked closely at the economics it was not viable for farm use, but if (as and when) the rebate goes this will start to look different, even if it is only for use as a blending product.

The biggest issue may well be that modern diesel engines are fussy blighters on the fuel...

Be cheaper to buy in vegetable oil and convert it to methyl ester yourself.

Unless you grow osr and got heaps of it.
All you need then is potassium hydroxide and Methanol!

Solar panels, a wind turbine and some batteries makes the most sense.

Even got an unused cooking plant for biodiesel production here, that I bought "cheap" 3 years ago

From my perspective, I am looking at non assured cropping, as well as the possibility of "Grow your Own" being a nice thing to do

Yep, wee pre heater for the oil and they will run on neat rape oil...
