9n was only about 25hp, it would need 20 of that to lug itself about at that weight, let alone pull anything else

be interesting stopping it at full speed too, the brakes were very very similar to those on a te20

Can tell petrol was cheap back in those days!!!!

they did put a 6 354 in a 188 back in the 70s, feck knows why they didnt put it into prouduction
It's a good question but, probably getting around a few problems would have cost too much. Such as steering? 188 has timing gear driven PAS, how are you gonna drive the pump on a 6.354?
Also, would the PAS system cope with the extra weight up front?
What about the clutch?
Doubt the 188 clutch would have coped?
Perhaps better MF abandoned the idea than produce a poor contrived model like Leyland did with the 2100?

As much as like like utterly rubbish Leylands, the 285 and 2100 really were genuinely and utterly crap.

Sure ive seen a pic of that 6cyl powered 185 somewhere......had a bloody huge exhaust up the side of the bonnet and a flexi cab....it did look a hell of a thing
Yes, it was at Cambridge Cowley road sale in about 1990, I took a picture of it.
Didn't study the engineering, but cosmetically it didn't look right?

very easy to drive a sterring pump from a 6 354, the clutch in a 1200 seems to cope fine, the steering would cope at least as well as if a loader had been fitted

put some 100 series tinwork on it and it would more easier on the eye

sure all modern tractor stylists are blind as bats, new tractors seem to get uglier by the year
I think late 90s to late 00s were the worst. Shapeless blobs. They have sharpened them up, now. For a Massey, I think a 699 takes a bit of beating in the looks department (as long as it's still there and not a pile of orange dust).

The first ones were dropped on the range in the New Forest near Fordingbridge. The Grand Slam crater was bulldozed but is still just visible and must have been huge. They dropped an inert one which drilled 80 feet down into the hill and is still there. When they dropped a Tallboy on test, they decided that the safest place to put the cine camera was smack in the middle of the target as the chances of hitting that spot were slim, but the Dambusters scored a direct hit and blew it to bits!

Also gearboxes (8 speed at least) and backend were heavily built and could easily take the power of the bigger 6 cyls. Plus the industrial engines could be used in them with very little work, and they were pretty strong engines
Also add the fact with the interchangeability of Ford components is quite handy, in far flung places around the world like in WA, NT, any of the Pacific Islands and out the back of no where in NZ thats a great advantage, with David Browns thats something you can't do, and if you did need parts ex UK you had a six week wait for parts back in the 70's and 80's, if you were lucky.....
