Right folks.

I can’t believe I’m even contemplating this but here we go. As some of you might remember I sorted 50 SBF ewes out of a batch of killers that were correct both ends. Well after another trip up north that number has grown too 112 correct blackies. I was going too put the texel on them, lamb them and fatten the lot.

New plan has been suggested by family today. Cut in half, put 1 half too texel, 1 half too BFL. Lamb them all down, cash the ewes with mule lambs in may at the breeding sales and run the texel crossed ones on as per my plans. See which one makes the most profit.
I’m not one for dismissing a not terrible sounding plan straight away so I’ve sort of agreed too give it a go. If they are a poor trade in the spring well they can stay here and graze.

One problem
While I posses several suitable texels I do not have a BFL. If I had been advised last week I knew of some sales that I could have got an old Leicester out off, used him then fed him and got shut. But this week I haven’t the foggiest where too head for one?? I’d rather have the old fashioned traditional Leicester too the crossing type. But really I just had too throw good types of lambs too sell.

I throw myself into your hands and any advice would be greatly appreciated. 👍👍

It’s 30 years since we last ran a Leicester tup. Each generation must learn the same lessons over and over...

🤔

Except it’s those 2 generations telling me this is a good idea...

They’re just looking to enjoy the spectacle of you learning the same lessons perhaps?

They actually have your own interests at heart. A little ‘trial’ now will save you enduring the pain of having such an idea yourself, pushing the idea into the background for another generation...

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
