new to growing beans. Agronomist has been to see them and says he’s seen black aphid pressure. I spray with a normal tractor on row crops so will push them down a lot also the Chem isn’t very nice for bees. He said it’s up to me if I spray but he thinks it could affect yield considerably would you spray?

4 years ago I had some bb aphid in my beans 2 weeks later there were non but every plant that had bb aphid had large numbers of lady bird larvae
patience will pay off I do not now spray any insecticide in beans because it is a waist of money
pgro has never shown pea and bean weaval damage to reduce yield but it reduces preditors

the aphid spray will not kill all of them but will reduce your lady birds

if you have not sprayed for pea and bean weaval or brichid then you will have a lot of ladybirds just give them chance to breed up

if you do spray honey bees do not get out before breakfast so spray before then but bumble bees can operate much earlier
use aphox

I have a few about, but no insecticide has been used.
My Beans are well podded and are heading towards the end of flowering so won't be treated
BB aphid are more of a problem if they come in at early flowering.

If they are on lots of plants, say a third and well into field I would use aphox. As others have said early infestation is worst.

Got odd plants playing hosts to aphids. Lots of ladybirds out there to keep them company! Beans are well podded and more worried about the choc spot that’s starting after the rains, so they had another fungicide yesterday

What insecticide have they recommended? Since you’ve mentioned pushing the crop down I’m assuming a nice thick canopy of winter beans. Aphox would be aphid specific but if you see any beneficials like ladybirds, harlequins, lacewings or hover flies in there I’d avoid treatment or at least do a trial plot with photos before and after, tied with yields.

As above, if the crop really is that thick then it will tolerate some aphid pressure. Thanks for asking the question in TFF (y)

Yes winter beans and quite nice and thick. Seen plenty of ladybirds and plenty of other insects although I’m not sure which ones. Aphox is what’s recommended. Agronomist has done his job and told me but said it’s my decision. Aphox is in the shed ready but can go back so at the moment I’m not going to do them but if it gets a lot worse I can.

Killing bees will also hurt yield

What matters most bees or aphids

Got to put a fungicide on the beans but the agronomist has said no need for insecticide so as I haven’t grown beans for a very long time I am in his hands (haven’t used insecticides on wheats or barley for years) but we have lots of beneficial things in there and don’t want to destroy them
