This popped up on the BMW Motorrad social media feeds earlier, haven't heard anything about BMW building a pickup but it wouldn't surprise me now Mercedes are in that space...

Edit: A bit of googling reveals it was a bit of fun, and only one will ever be built. Shame really, I would have had one in a heartbeat.

Considering what an expensive pile of scrap the x jeeps are, you'd want your head examined to buy one.

What happened to make your ownership experience seemingly so bad? An X5 is in the running for our next "soccer mom family bus" and all the reviews I've watched/read have been largely positive.

It looks like the Honda Ridgeline, which hasn't exactly set any sales records. That despite it being a really superb design with many novel features.
The Ridgeline and that design exercise are monocoque [unibody] designs. This is a similar basic chassis concept to that about to be released as the LR Defender, which I doubt will actually ever be produced as a pickup. Especially as it is made almost exclusively of aluminium.

Mrs HM has an X1 - she's happy with it. 170-odd horsepower is plenty for most roads too, the inside is comparable to a 3 series touring and yet it has the footprint of a 1 series. We looked at the X3 but even it felt a bit big for mum-and-kids, so I can't imagine what an X5 would be like in that regards. Does she go into the city much?

X5 is a lovely car. As long as you don't have ultra low profile-large diameter run-flat tyres and the M-Sport suspension fitted. In which case you might as well have a go-cart.

It does look lovely indeed, and some day I might take one for a weekend test. How would it go in a tight multi-storey parking spot though? The sort found in say Byers Road in Glasgow? Or how about a blast up the twisty bits of the narrow A roads on the west side of the NC500? I get the feeling it's a lovely big barge for the open road bit, but sometimes you want less metal in your cars so they can give you more back - I can't see Colin Chapman designing an X5.

She rarely drives into the city at all. The family bus is mainly used for carting teenage footballers around (which is why we need something with 7 seats) and for family outings. It gets used for doing the airport run when we have visitors, shopping trips etc. Typical family car stuff.

I would love the X5M version when they release it, but since the wife and kids are the main users they get the most input into the spec. I suspect it will end up being the plug-in hybrid version we order, as most of the journeys it undertakes are short enough to be completed on battery power alone, especially if the rumoured 50-mile range is close to being accurate.

You will not get the new model X5 with seven seats from now on. For seven seats you will need to buy the X7 or another brand.

If you're thinking that way, it might be worth trying for a test of the Tesla X. It has 7 seats and space, plus performance and Mrs B might buy into the virtue of the batteries. No idea of price comparison, but you have plenty money, right?

Be very wary about the hybrid X5 the reviews are terrible! The battery weight means fuel use is very high and very low towing capacity

When did they decide that? The two demonstrators my local dealer has both have the third seat row, so if it's been removed as an option it must have been fairly recently.
