No I have never felt the need!!What? A Scotsman who doesnt go to Kelso?
perhaps they feel the need to put in more effort (produce higher quality stock) when prices are lower, but don't feel the same pressure when prices are better. It's a funny thing but in my experience dear lambs usually means cheap tups and the year lambs are cheap tups are dear,I have never been able to figure out the reason for this
No I have never felt the need!!
Waiting in the queue at Kelso sucks, that's for sure!Last time I went they made me queue for an hour and a half to pay for my tups and another hour for a tup taxi for which I was charged. Never been back!!
He used to buy quality when he went there.I've never been to Kelso either. My father used to go to buy , but it's been a fair few years since we've bought tups there. When we found other tup breeders that suited us to buy off but who weren't selling at Kelso, that finished the need to go there.
Several years in the past , I thought the local mart tup sales looked incredibly dear compared to the Kelso trade in relation to the quality of tups being sold.
He most certainly did @sheepwise .He used to buy quality when he went there.

Dad for 50 years and myself 20 have lambed ewe lambs and sold as shearlings, be strong good lambs bought and equally hopefully strong decent things sold. Realise wrong, but more accurate, we work figures on shearlings sold say this august, and lambs bought few weeks after, just for interest. For decades it was barely a penny out, that the profit on the ewe sale compared to purchase price covered losses, wormers dips etc, the sheep enterprise % of farm running costs, fert, fuel etc and left the lambs as profit. Been a fair few years since this has been the case, almost certainly down to the surplus of running ewe lambs on estates and elderly farmers, and people not fancying the work runners were very profitable, easy money a decade ish ago, the normal of supply and demand has stopped that, but whilst still a big premium for lambed shearlings, it has dragged the price down due to choice and numbers. Think a fiver across the board up, lamb trade will stop the useless runners coming into the breeding chain, thankfully, but still a lack of money in the kitty for a lot of sheep farmers after some not so special years, I think? Got some good Suffolk mules, Suffolk cheviots and cheviot mules at Exeter Tuesday if anyone fancies some ewes that can sell early lambs without creeping

Not at all. as sadly I don't go!! Got to know Russell at bentham, where we sold our cattle, even further to go!! Top guy and think the world of him, we started selling these 6 tooth ewes about 4/5 years ago, he used to call in now and again, partly friendship, partly to see what we had about. We had a good year and saw the advantages of selling our weaned ewes at an early breeding sale which we don't see around here. Had an odd year when been held up on lorry and sheep look lesser sorts than they are, but literally come in from getting them in, load in a few hours so hopefully look themselves.Exeter's a long way for you to go?!
I hope the shearlings your interested in are in pens 1119,1120,1121, wont be down there sadly but dad will be, along with Suffolk 6 tooths and cheviot 6 tooths pens 1025 onwards and 258 onwards. Poor old boy getting old but knows his stock far better than me and loves a chat so please say hello. Think if you say a friend from internet forum he will clock on hopefully!! Good luck with tups and spend money wisely on pens 1119,1120 and 1121Anyone going to be at Exeter tomorrow? I've got a couple rams in and an eye on some shearings.
Hope you and your dad get a good trade @Lovegoodstock !! He sounds like my dad. I don't post his musings on here as I don't want to start World War 3 .
I've lost count of the times I've thought , I can't post that , they'd all cry......
I'll bet a lot of us on here can relate to that.
